A Circus Themed Baby Shower

This past Saturday I helped coordinate a baby shower for my brother in law’s girlfriend, Bethany. Since they don’t want to know the sex of the baby, I had to think of a theme that would be fit for both a girl and boy and also be pretty for the mother to be. I decided on a circus theme that had some fun and festive elements but still felt like a baby shower by using light colors and cute patterns. The day was a success!

The invite I designed introduced the theme with cute colorful flags and a few animals. Nothing over the top. Each invitation included a raffle ticket for guests to bring. This entered them in a contest to see who would win the centerpieces.

The decor of the shower featured a handmade banner for the gift table, red striped straws in all the water glasses, and festive centerpieces in large mason jars incorporating white, green, and orange. Each table as well as the gift table had a blue gingham fabric square in the middle for a pop of color.

I created an additional table where I displayed roasted peanuts and fresh popped popcorn for the guests to snack on as well as little cards for guests to share their “baby wishes” with the parents to be. I also laid a gingham fabric on the table except it was beige to incorporate more of the invitation colors.

Each guest had a “baby poll” card where they could choose what they thought the sex would be. Just something fun for them to do.

The cake was a delicious with vanilla cream and strawberries. Everyone seemed to really like it. And as a little favor and thank you for coming, everyone had a little bag full of animal crackers to take home. A perfect snack to end the afternoon.

I am so happy everyone had a great time and the mother to be enjoyed having all the lovely ladies around her. There were so many amazing gifts as well. I think the day went really well. Looking forward to doing more!

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, a brave band of heroes set out on a grand quest. They were searching for a fabled treasure. They knew the journey would be wrought with peril but they also knew it was essential. What were they looking for? The perfect sofa.

Okay, you may think that the above paragraph is a little silly, but if you’ve ever hunted for a sofa, you know it can feel like something out of a J.R.R. Tolkien novel. The search is difficult, time consuming, and may take you far from home. Furthermore, sometimes, the ending isn’t entirely happy. All of this is especially true if you’re on a tight budget.

When you’re sofa shopping, it doesn’t take long to realize that something is amiss. More specifically, the price tag. Sofas seem to be expensive. There isn’t a great answer to this dilemma other than supply and demand (nearly everyone wants a sofa) and the fact that it’s supposed to be a long term investment (lasting anywhere from 6 to 10 years). Here are some things to consider when shopping for a sofa to ensure you get a quality product.

Beware the cheap!
In many, many cases bargains should be your BFF; however, on the sofa search, keep deals at arm’s length. You really want to consider quality when shopping for a sofa because you’re probably going to be spending a lot of time there. Think of everything you do on the sofa – you want to be comfortable right? A cheap sofa may start to break down in a short amount of time sending you on sofa search round 2.

On that same note, be leery of second hand sofas. Like bargains, typically, second hand furniture is a huge pro. It can allow you to get something high end for a low price. Unfortunately, the U.S. has seen a resurgence of bed bugs in the past few years, and sofas can become infested. If you really want a second hand sofa or if that is your only choice do some online research on to how to inspect a sofa for bed bugs.

Take it for a test drive.
A lot of people are nervous when in a furniture showroom. They’re afraid of sales people descending on them, of going over budget, of getting the wrong item, or of wasting a salespersons’ time. Don’t be. Know what your budget is before hand. Know what style and/or color you’re looking for. When you find a sofa that fits those two categories, park yourself there for a while. Sit on that sofa for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Don’t let the salespeople pressure you. Be honest with yourself about how comfortable (or uncomfortable) the sofa is.

While you’re sitting there, listen to the sofa – do you hear any squeaking? The sofa should be quiet. Also, take a good look at the sofa. What do the legs look like? Are they attached, screwed in, have casters, etc.? Casters are becoming more common as people live in smaller spaces. This doesn’t necessarily mean the sofa is of low quality (answers to the questions in the next section will help you determine quality). However, if a sofa is on casters, make sure they are compatible with your floor. Check out this brief article on choosing the right casters for furniture and floor types.

If you find a sofa you feel comfortable with make sure to measure it. Showrooms are often HUGE and can make a couch feel much smaller than it really is.

Play 20 questions.
Once you’ve narrowed down your selection, ask the salesperson a bunch of questions such as:

  • What is the frame made out?
  • How is the frame held together?
  • What spring system is used? The eight way hand tying spring system is best because each spring is tied to the surrounding springs and the couch’s frame.
  • What are the cushions filled with? The most common filling is polyurethane – make sure you’re getting a high density as it will be firmer and should hold up longer.
  • Is there a warranty?
  • What brand of sofa is it?

Make an appearance.
While the inside of a sofa is obviously very important, the fabric is also critical. When selecting a fabric/upholstery, you’ll want to think about who will be using the sofa and how often. If you have pets or children and the sofa will be in a high traffic area you’ll want to avoid delicate fabrics and colors (ex. white) because they’ll be stained or snagged before the delivery guy even leaves. For high traffic sofas used by children and/or pets, consider something like microfiber.

When it comes to looks, remember that a sofa is meant to be a long term investment. You don’t want to pick a color or style that will be outdated before the next year rolls around. With that in mind, avoid prints and patterns (check Club Furniture for more tips). These tend to go out of style fast. It’s generally a good idea to stick to neutral colors like beige, almond, and tan.

If you’re groaning at the thought of “bland” furniture, don’t worry. You can always dress it up with pops of color. Use throw pillows, a throw over the back of the sofa, or a slip cover to alter the color. Depending on your style, you can pick up cheap and colorful ottomans, end tables, and coffee tables at places like Ikea and Target. The great thing about using accessories to bring fun shades to your sofa is that they can easily be swapped out as your taste and style changes. Orange today, green tomorrow.

As you embark on your quest for that simply stunning sofa, be brave. Know that cheap isn’t always best. Look for quality. In addition, don’t go for that “now” style and color. You’ll probably be living with this sofa for the next decade – make sure its at least bearable. Follow these tips and you and your sofa will live happily ever after.

The Joy of Using Fabric

Fabric has a special effect on your walls. Compared to other wall coverings, fabric can deliver the desired softness, warmth and texture in a room. You have the option to use it as a major backdrop in a room or just as a supporting character to highlight other furnishings.

With wall fabrics, you can either go for a formal or informal look based on the material and technique you are going to use. Understanding which technique best suits a material is a key advantage in helping you finish your improvement project sooner. Also, two factors will help determine which technique is right for you: the look you have in mind for your walls and the amount you are willing to spend for your wallcoverings.

Here are three wall fabric application techniques to help you choose the best design for your home:

Pasting
Applying adhesive to the wall allows a more steam-resistant surface and gives you the chance to strip off the material without any effort. If you are concerned with the residue paste, don’t worry as you can wash them off later on.

When you want to paste fabric, one important thing to remember is to flatten any crack or bump before deciding on this technique. Also, apply a white primer coating on colored walls to pave the way for trouble-free application of your light-colored fabrics.

Stapling
With this technique, fabric panels are sewn together and later stapled on the wall. The edges are then trimmed on double welt as a general rule.

A quilted fabric is preferred if you want to also enhance insulation as well as create an upholstered look. First, check the wall to see if stapling fabric on it is possible. Placing furring strips is an option if the walls have holes but make sure the surface won’t be damaged by the staples.

Upholstering
If you decide to upholster your walls with fabric, be ready to spend more time on the project. You can make your room insulated and less susceptible to noise through upholstery batting. Under upholstery batting, padded fabric is flanked by two-layered upholstery covering which refer to materials made from cotton, polyester or foam. Through this, the fabric appears more soft and splendid. Similar with stapling, the edges are trimmed as well.

Upholstering walls help hide the uneven surfaces and other imperfections, including cracks. However, this technique is not recommended in areas where steam and grease are constant source of concerns such as bathrooms and kitchens. You can also apply upholstering techniques on ceilings, but preferably to smaller rooms. This way, you can stretch the fabric very evenly and securely fasten it in different places.

Using fabric as wallcoverings will surely introduce a beautiful appearance into your room. One advice before you settle on an application technique is to purchase a small amount of fabric you have in mind and then scrutinize the material with your room furnishings. This is the only way you can see for yourself if you have the right fabric in mind.

Festival Favorites

Yesterday I was in awe as I looked through the fourth issue of Mag Rouge. What a beautiful collection of festival goodness, nature inspired weddings and stunning florals. If you are planning a wedding then Mag Rouge is a great resource for inspiration as it never lets you down.

With the collaboration of Kate, Jasmine, Hannah and Judit, this production is a well designed mag with unique inspiration, awesome resources and superb wedding submissions. This team of highly talented women are some of the best in the industry I have seen, and I look at a lot of wedding material and websites. It’s not often I get impressed with events or ideas but every time I open the new issue of Mag Rouge, I get inspired. Here are my favorites from the current edition. I hope you love them as much as I do.

This next event was held at the Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, the wedding of Jane and Steve. I fell in love with their vast array of pastels and amazing location. It seems they had the most wonderful weather as well. What a stunning event.

Besides a lot of other things I love about this next Australian wedding, the bride and groom showed a sense of endearment for the Earth and made sure this event reflected who they both were.

My favorite thing about this next formal California wedding is how they used the black in their decor. Besides showing a timeless elegance, the pops of the dark hues played off the white and pastel florals nicely creating a dramatic yet not overdone look.
