Today we got a late start but continued with our nature study and some general lessons. We read Pond by Gordon Morrison and learned all about how they change through the seasons. Then after completing some worksheets Elliot colored a POND letter sheet, we looked at a winter scene in One Small Square: Pond and he drew a pond in our nature journal. The plan was to draw the animals in the mud getting ready for winter but someone didn’t want to.

We also looked at a beautiful print of the pond ecosystem along with a review of all the animals and plants that thrive there and practiced numbers with new count and clip cards that Elliot really enjoyed. Both from @stephhathawaydesigns. It’s a very cold and windy day here so we are keeping cozy inside for sure.

Today for our pond study Elliot and I read Over and Under the Pond by Kate Messner (a fave) and Pond: One Small Square by Donald M. Silver and learned more about the animals, bugs and plants that live in and around ponds. Elliot had his letter and number lessons and then completed the turtle in our tape activity book. For our art session we both painted a pond scene. I plan on using mine for another project this week. Pond life is pretty neat.

Today we learned about coniferous forests and all about the trees, animals and plants that call them home by reading Into the Forest by Christiane Dorian. This book is beautiful! Definitely going to add it to our collection. Elliot also practiced number tracing and the letter T. Before our projects we studied the parts of a branch (buds and rings) with Nature All Around: Trees by Pamela Hickman. Then we made magic wands from branches and yarn. He chose all blue and I chose blue and yellow. And finally painted our clay trays we made Tuesday. Trees are pretty awesome.

For our nature study this morning we read A Tree is a Plant by Clyde Robert Bulla and learned a little more about bark from The Magic & Mystery of Trees by Jen Green. Then we had an art session and painted some bark from our yard. After lunch we learned more about how trees grow by reading It Starts with a Seed by Laura Knowles, which explains the process beautifully. Then we looked at different trees from the pine family in our new Smithsonian book Trees, Leaves, Flowers & Seeds and created little clay dishes stamped with needles. Can’t wait for these to dry. Elliot said he wanted to paint his and I might do the same.
