A few weeks ago my husband and I visited Benner’s Farm here on the island with my best friend and her daughter. It was the first time we were there and I have to say its a really cute place. Of course, the animals were my favorite part. All were friendly and kind, like most animals are, and some had unique characteristics. So much fun.

Every time I am around a farm animal, I can’t help but think of the terrible things humans do to them around the world. They are commonly treated as if they are worth nothing. Well, that is certainly not true. Chickens, cows, goats, sheep, and horses are just some of the amazing creatures we can learn from. They can inspire us all.

How can someone hurt an animal that clearly expresses emotion and value? Even if you don’t do it with your own hands, eating meat is the same thing. You are supporting something that kills, destroys, and initially hurts you and your family. The animals rights /veg movement is one to truly consider, at least one to look into and learn about.

This photo below was taken at the farm. These two sheep were so beautiful together. Not only did they express love for each other, they did it publicly with no regard. Nothing in your face, just a gentle gesture of kindness and compassion. You can always count on animals to make you smile and these two had my heart a glow. I will forever be in love with the Earth’s creatures. They continue to surprise and inspire me day after day.

I just hope most of all, that the world can see what I see and make the connection of how important they truly are.

Sound in Color: Portugal. The Man – Waiter, You Vultures

Portugal. The Man is a band from Portland, Oregon that started playing together in high school while they lived in Alaska. Their first studio album, Waiter, You Vultures, was released in 2006. This was the first time I heard them. Immediately, I like their sound. I thought it was unique and different.

The album art is colorful and graphic, full of vibrancy. The illustrative touches really bring interest to the work and the contrast against the white really sets a nice tone. The hand lettering is a cool touch as well.

Inspiration Photo Friday: Furry Celebrations

Tomorrow Dan and I will be celebrating exactly one year since we adopted Jenny, our maltipoo. To think she was found roaming the NY streets, abandoned by her previous owners is beyond me. It makes me extremely happy to know she is safe and loved and now has the chance at a wonderful life.

When I first laid eyes on her, I knew she had to be mine. Of course there were other cute dogs in the bunch but something told me Jenny was the one. And to this day I know in my heart I made the best decision to take her home. She has been such a positive addition to our family, bringing joy and happiness to all of us everyday. She is like my little baby and I love her to death.

On another celebratory note, our other dog Olive is turning 6 years old on Sunday. I have had her since she was 4 months old and must say she has grown into such an interesting and unique individual, I like talking to her (I got this ebook – a type of dog/horse communicator, one very useful thing!). Her personality is explosive, to say the least, and she has aged very slowly. She’s still as spunky as she always was.

I had the same experience with Olive that I had with Jenny. All it took was one look and I knew she was the puppy for me. Out of all the dogs in the pet shop, she stood out. I just can’t imagine life without her.

The fact that both girls get along and have built their own relationship with each other, put the biggest smile on my face. People told me not to get another girl because there are always problems but I didn’t listen. I knew it would all work out and it did. Our home is full of life because of these two and I couldn’t ask for anything more. This weekend is full of celebrations and thanks to Olive and Jenny, I can be the happiest mom to the two best dogs in the world.

Halloween Weddings

Having a wedding on Halloween can be a lot of fun. But just because its a holiday you don’t have to necessarily keep it themed. Incorporating orange, black, and other autumn hues can be enough to keep the vibe alive. Be careful not to get too literal or it can turn out like a kids Halloween party and not a wedding.

Just don’t forget what the day means to you and try not to lose sight what is really important. Keep it simple and classy and everything should work out fine. Take cues from this well loved holiday and add fun elements through decor, text, and color and everything will fall into place. Creating a feeling of romance, whimsy, and mystery are perfect undertones for a spectacular event.

Here are some good examples I came across that should bring you inspiration, not just for a Halloween styled wedding but the fall season as well. Enjoy!
