You’d be surprised how many people have a really hard time parting with clutter. What I mean by clutter are old clothes, old books and magazines, broken-down furniture, hardly functioning appliances, rusty dishes, worn-out carpet rugs, etc.

There are two types of people who can’t part with clutter:
1) Those who keep old stuff but also buy new things, and have a really hard time finding room for everything.
2) Those whose frugality borders with stinginess and keep repairing, sewing, gluing, stitching and painting old stuff, so they wouldn’t have to buy anything new.

Recognizing you have a problem is the first step to making your life easier. In order to bring yourself to a place where you’ll feel good about parting with clutter, you’ll need to sit down and think about this problem seriously. Admit to yourself that you don’t really need most of the things lying around the house and making it impossible to tidy up completely. Realize that these are just material things that should not have any emotional significance to you – at least most of these things. They are replaceable and SHOULD be replaced every once in a while.

Of course, this is not to say that you should be one of those people who go out and buy a new appliance every two months. The planet is polluted enough already and we should all learn not to waste stuff. So how do we make a distinction between wasting things, and parting with clutter at the right time?

Hints That Help You Recognize Unnecessary Items

  • Clothes you haven’t worn for over a year
  • Appliances that break down every other time you use them
  • Dishes that burn food
  • Furniture that looks run down, peels away, is uncomfortable to sit or sleep in
  • Rugs that look dirty even after washing them
  • Books and magazines that you don’t absolutely love

Once you’ve realized you’ll be better off without things you’re either not using, or you’re better off not using them, you can do several useful things with them:

1. Donate clothes to charity.
2. Find out which stores accept old/broken down appliances, and they’ll maybe give you a discount on new items.
3. Books and magazines can be sold on ebay or any similar website.
4. If you or anyone you know have a summer house where you don’t spend much time and aesthetics are not of importance, any old furniture, dishes, rugs etc. could do.
5. Throw away items that no one needs without a moment’s hesitation.

Now that you’ve cleared away all that clutter, your house and wardrobe are ready for new, functional things. Don’t over-buy or buy hastily. The point is not only to make your house a place you can breathe in and move about easily, but also to learn how to spend money wisely, on things you actually need.

Don’t buy a book the moment you feel like reading it; try borrowing it from a library or a friend. Think carefully about what you will really need and use in the kitchen. As far as clothes go, invest in good boots, jackets and winter coats, but don’t pay too much money for blouses, pants and skirts that you’ll get tired of quickly. Recycle all that you can, and feel good about moving on from old stuff.

Now that the warmer months are among us its time for Spring cleaning and to get organized. Here are some tips to liven up your space, clean out the clutter and take on a new season with ease.

Keep your home free from clutter by creating a space for everything. Utilize the space you have and make the most out of it. Keep closets in order by storing items you rarely use on top and important products at eye level.

Organization Tips
Keep notebooks and other office supplies neatly
stored for easy use.

Organization Tips
Even the dog can get organized! Keep all your pet’s
toys in a colorful bucket or bin so they aren’t all over
the place.

Organization Tips
Keep magazines in a decorative stand and you won’t hesitate to put them away.

Organization Tips
A vintage inspired catch-all holds papers and journals safe and neat under a coffee table.

Use clear containers to see what you have and label items if you rather have stuff hidden away. Add some unique elements, like using ribbon to tie sheet sets together. Recycle old jars to keep detergent in. Replace packaging so items look more refined and fresh.

Organization Tips
Colorful boxes add a nice touch to the top of a bookshelf while office materials are safely stored away.

Organization Tips
Labeled boxes are a great way to store items because they look neat and are very accessible.

Your Mail & Money

Get rid of all that junk mail by visiting Ecocyle and devote a space to store a shredder. When junk mail comes in, just shred it right away.

Organization Tips
Create a shredding station where junk mail doesn’t
have a chance!

Create a space for incoming and outgoing mail and devote five minutes everyday to look through it. Keeping it by the shredder is a smart idea!

Keeping tabs on your bank account balance is smart and responsible. Why not make it easy and fun by using free programs like Mint or Manilla? Having everything in one place is key.

Keep a calendar for bills only. Use different colors or those snazzy star stickers for each of your accounts, and it will be even easier to keep track of when payments are due.

Food

Setting up your week by meals makes grocery shopping and dinnertime much easier. Plus, I guarantee you will save money. Pick one day a week to plan out your meals, and only purchase the ingredients you need for that week. Less food will go to waste and you will know ahead of time what’s in store.

Keep snacks in clear containers in the pantry so you know when you run out. By storing the healthy snacks lower, you encourage both you and your kids to pick them over sweets. This will also add uniformity, color and neatness to the pantry.

Organization Tips
Clear jars brighten up the pantry when filled with dry goods. Plus, you can see when you need to buy more.

By keeping labels on food items facing forward you can see what you have. This keeps products organized and you won’t get stuck buying things you already own.

Follow these few tips and you’ll be on your way to a more stress-free and organized season in no time. Make your projects fun and get creative!

Brilliant Bookshelves

bookshelves, cleaning, design, organizing

Everyone has a bookshelf in their home. Most people just stack their books up with no sense of design. Maybe they will put a few nicknacks here and there to fill up space but most of the time all I see is a shelf being used as storage. Why not jazz it up a bit and add a sense of style that will not only look great but complete the entire room.

With a little guidance, anyone can do this. Yes, you need to have an eye for these things but that’s what I’m here for. I used to have two bookcases in my old living room that I will use as an example. I hope these tips can help you overcome the “bookcase black hole” and give your shelves a sense of design and pizazz.

First, you want to start organizing your books into categories. Either group them by color, by size or both. It’s also good to keep certain subjects together so you can find what you are looking for in a pinch. Sometimes it’s cool to have a section of old vintage books to add a little touch of history to the room.

Group books by subject

Keeping books of the same size together looks organized and clean

Then, gather up some cool things around the house that you can showcase on the shelves. If you collect things this would be a great opportunity to let them shine. I happen to have a collection of old bottles and vintage radios that I display throughout mine. Any other unique accessories you have that you think would look nice, include them as well. You don’t want too many or else it will look too crowded so make sure you pick the best small items you have.

Break up books with unique accessories

Bookends are something you should consider buying if you don’t own some already. They will definitely come in handy and they add a nice touch. Nowadays, there are so many different types and styles you should have a lot of luck finding one that matches your decor.

Now that you have all your items and books together it’s time to have some fun. It’s important to remember balance. You want to think of the bigger picture so the final result looks complete and well put together.

Try to spread the books out among all the shelves. Arrange the books largest to smallest, stack some up on top of each other and place them on different sides of the shelves. You don’t want all the shelves to look the same so switch it up a bit.  Then start adding the decorative items. Keeping size in mind, fill in the empty spaces. This might take some time. You will need to move things around a bit to see what looks best. Always keep some space around items and don’t crowd the shelves.

Place bigger items on top

A great tip for placing items is to group things in threes. Sometimes when you put two things together it looks like it’s missing something. Three is the perfect number.  Keep this in mind when you are decorating any space in your home.

Group items in threes

Small objects find a cozy place on top of a vintage radio

Placing an object or a bowl with some unique items on a stack of books lightens it up

Now, you want to use an array of items but try not to go crazy.  Keep objects in the same color families, such as neutrals, so you don’t have one bright yellow piece standing out. Having an eyesore like that will ruin the look.  You want your book shelf to stand out, not one particular item.

Glass shelves allow more space to showcase your favorite items

Have fun with this project.  If you’re like me, you will want to rearrange every room in the house. I absolutely love doing things like this. Not only because I am a designer and addicted to organizing, but it really relaxes me.  The bonus is a great piece of art I created with objects that I love.

Add some color and organize your office space as well with magazine files and boxes

What’s even better than that is how people get drawn in to look and are interested in my book collection. The whole point of design is to attract and submerge. You want people interested in what you created and then happily drown in the sweetness of your work. A few simple makeovers like this will add a modern and clever touch to any room.

{I would love to see how you did on this project. Send me a photo and I will post my favorites}
