This truly resonates with me because as long as I can remember I felt an urge to create. Anything really. The arts just happened to be the true connection I had with the people around me. It enabled me to express myself in ways that were necessary. Whether it was drawing, capturing my vision through a lens, writing and playing music, digital design, creating unique spaces, collage, putting my thoughts and feelings on paper, or painting… I dove in and opened myself up to theworld. Creating was something I was born to do. It keeps me alive. It gives me purpose. The desire that fuels the fire within me will never fade. It’s just not possible. I simply cannot imagine who I would be without it. So I honor the gifts I hold and spread as much beauty as I can. I’m just so grateful.

I remind myself this every day. Even though it’s pretty damn hard to put myself first when I have a family and two dogs to take care of, a home I constantly tend to, finances to stay on top of, daily things on my list to check off, and growing my business. Sometimes I feel like all the busy is smothering me and it’s hard to find the time to put me first. I know a lot of women, especially mothers may feel this way. And I hate it. This is a main reason I don’t want another child. It’s just too much of a balancing act and another kid would make it even harder. Besides, I always wanted just one so I’m completely happy and content with the sweet boy I have.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For me, adding more to my plate is NOT the answer. I want my life to be easier, NOT harder or more challenging. And I feel like this is a way of thinking that helps me thrive a bit more. It’s the idea of a simple life that allows me the time and space to put me first and love ME more. And also to be more creative which I NEED. I don’t want my life to just be #busy. I want my life to be fulfilling and enjoyable. I want to feel calm and happy. I want to feel at peace with myself and my thoughts. When there is too much to do that is not how I feel. And that’s why I am always trying to simplify, streamline, and lessen the burden of life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because LIFE should not feel like a burden. It should be a steady flow of happiness where you thrive and grow. And that’s my goal. It’s in this way of life that I can focus on myself and be the best me I can be. And we should all want that. When we put ourselves first and tend to our needs we can be our best selves for the people we love and also project that authenticity to the world around us. So treat yourself well because you deserve it. Treat yourself well because you are the only person who truly can. Treat yourself well because you are truly worth it.

These past few months there has been a shift within me. I’ve always been a positive person but lately my vision for the future just seems totally doable, as apposed to challenging (like it sometimes can be). My outlook is pure sunshine. And even though we have a lot going on and I have a ton of things on my mind, my drive to make shit happen is in full force. Between big work projects, holidays, Elliot’s bday party in May, my joint bday bash with my mom in July, various house projects, and planning our family vacation, I have more than plenty to keep me busy. My work hustle is on point, more than it ever was, and I’m doing my best to really focus on the growth of my business. Being positive is at the core of everything and when you surround yourself with the things you love it makes it so much easier to be happy. And that is what I strive for. My vision for the future is looking bright because I will NOT have it any other way. And that is my superpower.

Reproductive Health Act

So New York just passed the Reproductive Health Act into law and even though it’s something that already should have been in place, I am happy this milestone has come. Now late-term abortion (24 wks +) is not a crime and more factors are taken into consideration. I know this is a very sensitive topic with people, on both sides of the issue, but I find that most let their personal feelings blind them to what the real point of this is.

Women have the right to decide what they want to do with their bodies and that includes pregnancy. Personal feelings and opinions of strangers don’t apply. You can feel however you want but in the grand scheme of things, which is women’s reproductive rights, you are not in a place to order someone else around. And in all honestly, it’s none of your business. I’ve been involved in a few Facebook threads on this and some of the comments I have seen are horrible and quite out there. Some said this law is evil, society has gone mad, and others feel this is all for harvesting babies organs. One guy said to abort the mother and save the baby. Fun!

I am not even going to waste my time with the pro-lifers because they are against abortion anyway and clearly see things backward (in my opinion). But there are people who aren’t against it that think the RHA allows doctors to just kill full term babies for no reason. It’s mind-boggling the visuals and ideas these people come up with. When in reality the new law states that late-term abortions are legal based on the viability of the fetus or if the woman’s life/health is at risk under the judgment of a professional practitioner (not just physicians). Even before, abortions after 24 weeks were permitted if the mother’s life was at risk. So, I am not sure what all the drama is about. This issue is now a matter of public health – which it should be – and protects women at greater lengths during pregnancy complications. And how is this bad?

Statistically, most abortions happen during the first trimester. Only 1.3% occur beyond 20 weeks (NCBI). I feel for the women who have to deal with that circumstance, whether early or late term. The physical and mental toll they carry can be pretty overwhelming. And knowing first hand what it feels like to lose a baby, I can imagine the heavy heart they carry down that path. It’s just so disappointing to see the hate out there when we should be lifting up these women in need.

No one thinks terminating a pregnancy is fun or exciting. Seriously? It’s a tough decision for anyone that has to consider it and no one has the right to tell a woman what to do in her situation (ESPECIALLY A MAN). Who do people think they are? And judging isn’t cool either. Until you have walked in that person’s shoes you really should zip your lip. What happened to supporting each other through hard times? I would expect women especially to show love and understanding in these situations. We need to stick together more than ever now.

And maybe instead of bashing available options for women, people can focus their energy on spreading awareness and educating young people (both males and females) on safe sex. Let’s work together to teach responsibility and be more open about the issue. It all starts at home and with the help of schools and the community, outreach on these important issues can be much easier. Let’s be a bit stronger – not just for ourselves – but for the women around us. Let’s build each other up, instead of tearing each other apart. That is the world I want to live in. How about you?
