Planning a wedding can be very stressful if you aren’t prepared. As I plan my own DIY wedding, I thought it would be great to share some things I’ve learned as well as give tips and advice for all you newbies out there doing the same. Even if you’re not getting married, you can share this info with someone you know who is or even use it for other events you plan on having in the future.

The first thing you must figure out is your budget. Having a large budget for your big day can make things easier because you can hire help and choose places that include it with their services. However, what happens if you don’t have a lot of money? DIY weddings aren’t as scary as you may think. If you’re prepared and ready to get creative, then it can be a blast.

Being organized is most important. Having a folder or journal will certainly help in this department. Keep all papers together and use the journal to hold inspiration that you find along the way. Cut photos from magazines, write down ideas and create a checklist of things you need to get done so you stay on track. Try to create a timeline of when you want to get things done and stick to that schedule. This will make all the difference.

DIY Wedding - Quick Tips

Then, start figuring out what you need. Sometimes it’s not necessary to have certain things. Maybe having a DJ doesn’t really fit your budget. Fine. Remember, there is no right way to have a wedding. It’s your day and it should reflect who you and your fiancé are. It’s just silly to feel pressure when this is something you should be excited about.

DIY Wedding - Quick Tips

{Unique centerpieces don’t have to be pricey. There are a lot of affordable flowers you can use and tons of different ways to present them. Think of other items you include so you don’t spend tons on flowers.}

DIY Wedding - Quick Tips

{Incorporate items that mean a lot to you so the even is more personal}

Now its time to do some research. I did months of it before I was even engaged! Now that I have 3 weeks to go I feel confident in my decisions. Looking into venues, caterers, flowers, décor and favors is a lot to do and it will take up a lot of your time. But it’s supposed to. You will feel comfortable knowing you looked into all your options and chose what is best for you in the end.

{There are so many great blogs out there for inspiration. Definitely take the time to search through some of them for ideas}

DIY Wedding - Quick Tips

{Always test the food you plan on serving! We have decided to go with cupcakes instead of a cake and you bet we tried them first}

If you stick with these tips, it will surely help you along your journey. Always try to get the best deals and don’t overwork yourself. By starting ahead of time, you will get it all done before the wedding and that will be a huge relief. Just breathe and stay focused and your DIY wedding will truly be unique and amazing.

Maintaining, organizing and keeping memories close to your heart is an everyday task. There are plenty of ways to protect and preserve the things that really matter in your life and scrapbooking is one of them. Not only is it a great way to tell your personal story but it is a unique way to tell someone else you care. A handmade or printed scrapbook makes an excellent gift.

There are a few elements to this craft one must know in order to successfully create a collection of keepsakes. Once you are aware of them, the process is much easier. Think of these tips as a guide to inspire, motivate and help carry you down the yellow brick road of scrapbooking.

Imagine
First, you must know why you are creating it. What is this book going to say? What is it about and who does it reflect? Knowing the meaning of the book is the best way to create something honest, personal and meaningful. This will definitely reflect through your work.

Scrapbooking 101
{Create interesting pages by combining the use of text, color and imagery}

Scrapbooking 101
{Allow the pages to also have enough negative space}

The Main Attraction
Now think of what type of book you want to use. If you are going the handmade route, you have lots of options to choose from from. Deciding on the style and size will send you along to the next step smoothly. If getting the book professionally printed is your preferred method than research companies and pick the one that fits your price range and offers a great product. Some I recommend are MyPublisher, Inkubook and Blurb.

Scrapbooking 101
{Experiment with different layouts before you decide on the final design}

Scrapbooking 101
{Arrange items so they are readable}

Collect
Gather up all your materials you want to use.  Whether it’s a collection of photographs, various items from a vacation or mixed media, having it all in front of you can allow you to see the bigger picture. This will help you tell the true story and layout the pages much easier.

Scrapbooking 101
{Collect all your materials together and get ready to create something beautiful}

Get Crafty
Now think of any extra materials you want to include. Decorative paper, special borders, stickers – there are tons of creative ways to add that touch of flair to any project. Think out of the box and come up with items that are not so traditional. Whatever you choose, remember to carry a theme throughout the book and reflect the materials used. Having it  all make sense and show a cohesive look will help it become a piece of art.

Scrapbooking 101
{Add some color or texture to the title page for interest but make sure it matches the theme of the book}

Tell the Story
Layout each page in the order you prefer and play around with some ideas. Think of this as sketching out a drawing. It’s good to design a temporary version before you carve it into stone. Doing this will allow you to make changes as you go and not have to redo something that is permanent.

Scrapbooking 101
{Use color to highlight spreads by adding unexpected borders}

Scrapbooking 101
{Don’t forget to include a title page}

Scrapbooking 101
{Combine imagery and text in fun ways}

If you follow these few essential tips you will be on your way to scrapbooking bliss. I also recommend you do some research to see examples of what other people have done. You can do this on the internet or check out some books on the subject. I always say it’s a vital step to any art form.

Gaining inspiration from the stories of others will help you not only distinguish your own but present it in a way you might have never thought of. Happy Scrapbooking!

The Henry Townsend House is a beautiful site. Built in 1830 by Henry Townsend himself, this historic home sits on an acre and a half of land. It is part of the West Neck Historic Road Historic District with many other homes and buildings from the 19th century.

Surrounded by a picket fence the property includes a garage, smokehouse, well, shed and a privy which is an outside bathroom. You will see a lot of exterior toilets with older homes in this area. From 1858 to 1909 it was owned by the Scudder family and later the Conklins until 1911. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 at which W.B. Young was the owner.

From first glance, there is a lot to take in. The house is very elaborate in its design and has a great amount of decorative elements that really bring it to life. With one-and-a-half stories, it features a center-hall plan and a one-story side wing. This wing received exterior alterations in the 1850s such as the overhanging eaves above the porch. The glass porch in the back of the home is a much recent addition.

The front porch is held up with posts that feature scrolled corner braces. This design element is continued throughout the entire home. You will notice it significantly on the street side in the carved rafter ends of the home. This Swiss-inspired detailing creates a doll house look and adds an artistic feel to the overall design.

The garage was originally a carriage house built with clapboard design as well. This too has exposed rafter ends included in its one-and-a-half story plan. The six over six sash windows are also very common for this time period.

Because it is part of the West Neck District, the Henry Townsend House is of great significance. It expresses a love for design that you can clearly see. It’s nice to know that the current owners have kept it in such amazing shape. With the colorful flowers and lush foliage, they have brought life to the home, making this historic piece of art a modern day dream.

Chalky Pastels

In the May issue of Better Homes & Gardens they feature chalky pastels and include some tips on how to use them. Being a lover of pastels I had to share these pretty colors. Soft and cheery are great words to describe them for they bring a touch of happy to any space.

Using them on the walls will make a room seem larger so painting a small space a lighter hue is a great idea, if thats what you’re going for. Painting a ceiling will do the same. Accessories that showcase springs beautiful colors help brighten up a space so touches of pretty pastels here and there create a flow of sunshine.

Here are some examples of using pastels successfully. Hope they inspire you to bring spring closer to home. Surrounding yourself with happy colors makes all the difference.
