One thing most people have in their homes are shelving units. Just because they are considered storage furniture doesn’t mean they have be boring. There are plenty of ways to dress up these pieces and make them super stylish and interesting. Here are a few tips on how to do that:

Sometimes Less is More
This image is a great example of how negative space can really help your cabinets look fresh. A few pieces on top, a lamp or a pair of vases, and either one of more pieces of art. Always remember that most of the time groups of three look best. Take note of the symmetry that comes into play on the shelves. The horizontal and vertical stacks on each side, the few round decorative items to help keep the space fluid, and the size of the items help keep everything even.

Color Play
If you want your shelves to stand out, then keeping within a color scheme will do the trick. Because everything on the shelves are cohesive, they will actually pop more. As apposed to having so many different things thrown together, which can just end up looking like a big mess. Below is a great example of how finished and fresh this idea can be. Yellow and White are taking the main stage here, as pretty dining pieces are featured. A few books, photographs, and other decorative items help mix it up a bit for more visual interest. You can also organize books by color to really make a statement.

Mix and Match
Now this can be tricky, but you can have a bunch of items on a shelf with books and have it look pretty cool. The photo below is a nice example of how to do this. Notice the decorative items are all of the same theme, birds! And the colors of those items are found in the books as well. This is how to keep it less messy and more about making sense.

I just love how the mixed woods and black contrast with the white and light gray planters. And the green really brings in a warm, organic vibe. I think plants always bring a nice touch to any space. The multi color books on the shelves pop without looking like too much, thanks to the neutral palette. And those chairs…LOVE!

Using neutrals in your space is a great way to create a calm and peaceful environment, while being stylish and modern at the same time. I think a lot of people must feel like they don’t know where to start when it comes to incorporating this lighter palette into their home. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

White is not boring
White is certainly not dull when it comes to interior design. First of all, there are all different hues so definitely look into these options before starting. Second, having white walls can really make or break a room, but it all depends on the other colors in the space as well. Think of white as a color that blends with everything else around it, so it depends on that support to really shine.

Playing up textures
When you truly want to design a space with neutrals, and I mean whites and creams, considering texture is a huge factor. Each will bring a special characteristic to the room and help evoke a feeling, which will really bring the whole design to a new level.

That seamless feel
In the end you want a space that is warm and inviting, so make sure you keep the hues at a minimum. Having 10 different whites fight the spotlight isn’t cool. And I can guarantee the design will really look off. Decide on a few and go from there. You want them to blend but stand out on their own so stay within the same tone. Otherwise, you will have one that doesn’t seem to fit the puzzle.

arranging furniture, comfy cozy space, decorating, lighting, natural flow

Creating that cozy, comfy space is easier than you think. Arranging furniture in a room doesn’t have to be complicated. I think when people have a large space, they tend to get a little confused on how to place everything. And the same with small spaces. But there are just a few key things to remember:

Make sure there is a natural flow
Place the furniture so there is space around each piece. And allow the room for people to walk and get by. Now too much room can feel cold, so grouping things together for a more cozy feel always works. For example: don’t just put your furniture against the walls. Create a warm area in the middle of the room and leave space around it.

Allow lighting to play a big role in the space
Depending on how big the space is, make sure there is good enough light in most areas so people can gather and chat. So maybe there is a lamp by either side of the couch, a floor lamp across the room, and maybe a small sized lamp on another table or console. And using that number 3 helps here as well, just as long as they are set apart from each other. Think of a triangle where each light hits a point. That is a good reference.

Combine different size accessories with bigger pieces
Let’s just say you don’t want to walk in a room and have everything be at the same height. You want to have a nice variety so that all the pieces have a flow and your eye moves around the room. So different size accessories, textures, colors, etc…all play a major part in that.

Here are some nice examples of cozy spaces that really turned out beautiful using the these key elements. Hope they help and inspire you to create an amazing space in your home.
