The snows of winter are melting and the rebirth of spring is upon us. As the weather finally relents from the cold war, people are getting ready to step back out into the world and spend some much needed time in the warmer airs of spring. Gardens are being seated, grills are being cleaned, and patio furniture is getting uncovered and dusted off.  Spending the warm spring evenings outdoors in your yard is a great way to relax with family and friends, more time spent outdoors means it’s time to add a little light to your spring nights.

If you don’t have any yard lights or you’ve been thinking about changing your lighting scheme, then springtime is the perfect time to do it. Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal and these are themes you should have in mind when you design a landscape lighting scheme. Low lighting such as pathway lights, hanging lights, and garden lights are excellent choices for adding a little nighttime color to your yard.

Walkway Lighting
Path lights are great outdoor lighting additions to your nighttime landscapes, and sensible ones as well. You certainly don’t want people stepping off a path into any dangerous territory, especially if you have dogs that may be leaving a bit of a mess around the yard. Path lighting adds a nice accent to your walking paths and can serve as a sort of guided tour around your yard.

Garden Lighting
Is your garden in bloom yet?  Why not highlight the fruits of your labor or your beautiful flowers in bloom. When lighting a garden consider the philosophy of “less is more” and be careful to avoid over-saturating a garden with light. You can even be creative with your light choices and look for color schemes that compliment or accent the flowers in your garden.

If you have a pond in your garden then adding some underwater or floating lights are a great way to give it some serious appeal. Floating tea lights are an easy way to add some light to a pond and are fairly inexpensive as well.

Hanging Lights
Give trees in your landscape the night time effect of coming into bloom by adding some hanging accessories to them. A popular do-it-yourself project is to take a set of jars, bunch up a string of Christmas lights inside of them, then hang them on a tree. It’s a simple craft project that gives more than one season of life to your holiday lights and can make your yard seem rather festive at night.

The Chinese celebrate the lunar New Year in February and herald it as the coming of spring. You can take a design tip from them and add a little Asian flavor to your yard. Paper lanterns come in a variety of styles and colors. Just be mindful when choosing them that you buy safe designs. The last thing you want is a string of paper lanterns bursting into flames on the outside of you home.

A few parting tips
Remember that the theme with spring is one of rebirth and renewal. Refresh last year’s lighting scheme or create an entirely new one with lights. Don’t overdo it, remember, flowers are coming into bloom not fully blossoming. Add enough lights to add a gentle and intimate touch to your landscape but don’t go overboard. Shaded and diffused lighting helps to keep a more intimate touch without overpowering your lighting theme.

At the end of the spring night though, the light design should be something that mirrors you as an individual and highlights the best aspects of yourself and your yard. Add your personal touch and you and your guests will love spending those wonderfully warmer spring nights in your yard.

Effective Solutions for Moving & Packing a Storage Unit

It’s not often that you meet someone who is super thrilled about moving, often times, it’s quite the opposite. The moans and groans that come up during a move are often more attributed to the dis-organized mess relocating, packing and storing can quickly turn into. However, with a little foresight and planning this doesn’t have to be the case.

Keeping organized and knowing what is where is an essential part of using a storage unit for the first time and keeping the one you have in top shape.

Come With a Plan
Showing up to the storage unit for the first time with a truckload of items and no real plan on how you’re going to make it work is definitely not recommended. Storing items this way can usually lead to a host of organizational and space problems that could have been avoided with just a little more planning.

Instead, take some time to evaluate what you have and how it’s going to work. All storage facility owners will let you take a look at your unit before you move in. Units exist in a variety of sizes from the smallest 5’ x 5’s to larger 300 square feet versions.

Boxes, Bins and Hampers?
Organizing your storage unit just right is a lot like the game Tetris. Certain pieces will fit better together than others. If you have a desk that you will be storing look to see if you have any other items that can fit in the space underneath it or perhaps tucked away into a shelf.

As far as storing options you have two real answers and one non-traditional solution. Perhaps the most common item among storage units everywhere is the box. Boxes are great, economical choices but such is not always the case.

If you plan on using boxes for your move, try to make sure that they are all of a similar size and shape and if possible, exactly the same. Aligning boxes that don’t match up exactly can cut down on the amount of space you are using effectively as well as lead to stacking problems. Also, if possible try to stay away from boxes that have already been used. Boxes that have been used to transport foods could have been exposed to molds or been damaged in a small way which can work against you as they sit in storage.

Plastic bins are a great alternative to this dilemma. Plastic containers and bins are more resilient to time and can be used for a variety of other purposes when the time comes to take the items out of storage. While the initial purchasing price may be a little higher than acquiring some boxes, the long term implications are worth the effort.

If you’re looking to be really economical, take a close look at some of the objects you are storing and their ability to house and hold other things. Hampers, washer and dryers can hold towels, blankets and clothes along with other items depending on how well they are packed.

The Logistics
Come to the unit with a plan. Think about things like heavy objects on the bottom and lighters ones on top. If you have a mattress set think about ways you can slide it in so it keeps the same feel of a set of stacked boxes. With enough planning, you would be surprised about how much can really fit in a twenty five square foot space.

Label Away
Tedious? Yes. A little time consuming? Yes. Does it pay off later? Absolutely. Labeling every box with a general category along with what is inside can save a world of a hassle later on when you need to access them again. If you haven’t done so already, take some time to label up those boxes and bins.

Dust Prevention
Dust can be your worst nightmare, especially if you are storing any sort of electronics or appliances. To combat dust cover anything that is exposed. Use old sheets or even garbage bags to lay over these items. Also, make sure they are securely attached so the protection doesn’t shift as you stack or move other things around it.

Future Access
It may be elementary, but don’t forget to leave the things you might want to access first, the last for packing. Having the items you need most readily right in the front will ensure that you don’t have to go wading through boxes and bin four months from now when you want to get an item out.

Taking the extra effort to organize a storage space can pay off. Not only can it keep the items you are storing in the best shape possible it will also cut down on those moans and groans when you go to access it in the future.

Decorating is something that requires a decent amount of resources. Proper choices can help you relax, bringing less stress into your life, and allows a more easy sleep pattern as you find serenity in your home. What would the proper choices be when it comes down to it? This article aims to help you find the answers with the following tips:

Create a focal point
Having a focal point in your home is something that happens regardless of whether you want it to or not. It can be anything, though your control is what makes it unique and interesting. It can be a souvenir, a beautiful vase of flowers, or something else. Whatever your choose, it will become the face of your home, showing your personality with it.

Organize your household
Clutter is something any household has to go through. Anything that doesn’t serve a purpose and you’re not happy with should go, opening up the way for new belongings. This is essential, as having less clutter around your home will also let you clean your Sydenham Hill home much more easily, devoid of objects that collect dust for no apparent reason.

Open up space
Having too much around your home will also reduce the amount of free space we have available. Opening up the room will make it appear larger, giving you the freedom of not feeling cooped up in a small place. You can achieve this by ridding yourself of all non-essential decorations and furniture that serve no purpose other than to take up space.

Lighting
Keeping individual locations lit up can really help with the overall mood of your home. You can turn individual lights off according to your needs, giving you more flexibility in the process. You can use full-spectrum light bulbs which are better at mimicking natural light than regular ones.

Keeping clear pathways
It is important to make sure your furniture allows you to move around, unhindered. Nothing can be more annoying than bumping your knee against the edge of your coffee table when you’re trying to get to your couch or something similar. Making sure your furniture is properly arranged can save you a whole lot of trouble.

Keep colors simple
You should use restraint when you’re using bright and vibrant colors in patterns. Mixing them together can be straining on the eyes if you are using too many bright colors. Make sure there is plenty of contrast in what you work with so the design is cohesive.

Natural elements
Bringing parts of the outdoors in your home can be an excellent way to create a more relaxing and earthly atmosphere. A few houseplants, a mirror facing your largest window, and landscape photographs on a wall can make the place seem bigger and more interesting compared to what it was before.

Use your imagination
Whatever your dream home may be, you should follow that dream and do your best to make the most out of it. Whether you want your home to look like a cabin in the woods, a castle, or something similar, you can make that happen with enough effort.

Eclectic Not Hectic

When you’re moving into your first place you’re likely to end up with a hodgepodge blend of furniture. A couch from your parents’ basement. A dining room table and chairs from grandma’s attic. A – well, you get the idea. The same thing tends to happen when you’re furnishing and decorating a home on a budget. A desk from your neighbor’s yard sale. Throw pillows from the clearance bin at Target. So on and so forth.

The end result has the potential for greatness in the form of a truly unique space wrought with personal style. However, the end result also has the potential to leave your home looking like a cluttered thrift store. The question then becomes how to keep eclectic home furnishings and decor from looking hectic and thrown together. Here are some options:

Start with a base coat
Try to pick one color that will serve as a unifying shade in the space. For example, white is often a good choice because pretty much everything goes with it, and if you’re moving into an apartment there’s a good chance the walls will be white or some shade of off-white. Get many items in your base coat color and let other items that you can’t control the appearance of (ex. your Aunt Anita’s love seat) act as pops of color in the space.

Clear out clutter
Try being a minimalist to downplay how eclectic your belongings are. Allow the natural features of the space such as large windows, rich wood floors, or exposed brick to act as accessories to your furnishings.

Force a match
If you’re truly concerned about your furniture being diverse consider altering it to match. For example, you can buy slipcovers for couches and love seats online without racking up a huge bill. In addition, you can paint and refinish many pieces of furniture including dressers, tables, entertainment centers, picture frames, and bookcases to make them look more alike.

Add a pinch of mix and match
In your eclectic space, try sprinkling in elements that match one another. For instance, throw pillows and picture frames that are the same color. You could also try a throw rug and a throw (blanket) draped across the back of a chair that match. These elements, here and there, that do match can help tie the rest of your decor together or at least make the rest of your decor not seem so obviously miss-matched.

A square peg in a round hole
Don’t worry about making sure every aspect of your furniture match. For instance, if you’ve managed to secure furniture in similar shades don’t worry about the shapes being different and vice versa.

Find a peace keeper
If the pieces in your home have colors that traditionally conflict with one another find a piece that can unify them. For example, if you have a green sofa and a wicker chair with orange striped cushions look for accessories that can unite those two pieces such as throw pillows, wall art, or a rug that have both green and orange.

Embrace the eclectic
Having a truly eclectic space isn’t bad. It’s bohemian. Don’t be afraid (or embarrassed) to simply embrace a space full of eclectic furnishings and decor. Mix-matched items can make a space feel relaxed and casual. They can say, “hey, a free spirit and mellow personality lives here.” There’s nothing wrong with that.

At some point or another in life, most of us are going to be living in a space with eclectic furnishings and decor. There are certainly things that can be done to help tie pieces together and make the space feel more planned out. However, on the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with embracing the randomness. The bottom line is to go for furnishings and decor that you love, things that truly speak to you. If you do that, your space will never feel hectic and thrown together – it’ll always feel like home.
