Since 1994, James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy have been creating unique and diverse tracks as Unkle, which once included DJ Shadow, who has always been favorite of mine. This British collaboration has had a series of guest artists on their albums, the first being Psyence Fiction in 1998. I fell in love the first time I heard it.

Since then, they have released four other albums and continue to showcase their talent for mixing different styles of music but keeping a certain sound that is only owned by them. The album art for Psyence Fiction has a collage and grafitti-esque feel expressed through various tones of brown and texture. A nice palette to look to for a neutral foundation.

I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for awhile. My best friend Meg and her daughter Leona Faye are coming to visit later tonight and I can’t wait. I don’t get to see them much because they live in Jersey, so when they come, I am always super excited.

Besides catching up and hanging at the house, we are going to Benner’s Farm tomorrow for an afternoon of pumpkin picking and visiting with the farm animals. I have been wanting to go this particular farm for a few years now so its nice to finally go. And to spend some time with my favorite girls and all the awesome animals will surely make for a great day. After, we will carve our pumpkins and have a relaxing night.

Below is a photo I took back in 2011 at the Queens County Farm Museum where we had our wedding. Being at a farm just feels like home for me. The fresh smells, bountiful gardens, and of course the beautiful animals that really call it home. I have always loved how aware they are most of the time. When they look at you, you really feel it. Making contact with an animal is not like a human, it’s very different. There is just something about it that truly makes my heart skip a beat.

I have taken countless photographs of animals along my journeys and each one of them is unique and fascinating. They have such wonderful personalities, and to witness that is a gift. I love when I visit a farm or sanctuary and know in my heart the animals there are taken care of and safe. We all deserve to have a home sweet home.

Sound in Color: The Cure – Galore

Who doesn’t know The Cure? I mean, they’re one of the biggest bands in the world and still create amazing music. Galore is an awesome compilation of their singles that were recorded from 1989 to 1997 and a must have for any fan. With songs like Just Like Heaven and Friday I’m in Love, you can’t go wrong.

The album cover is a photo of a baby holding an ice cream cone taken from an interesting perspective, making it seem larger than life. The saturated hues bounce off the page and frame the yellow skin toned child nicely. Lots of energy through color is expressed through this cover. Just like their music. There is nothing like a Cure song to make you smile.

The color palette would work nicely for a children’s party and even for a space in your home. It’s fun and has a unique contrast.

So this weekend, my husband and I are taking a little trip to Spring City, Pennsylvania for a 2 day getaway. The whole reason we are going is to visit Pennhurst Asylum, an authentic haunted place that been transformed into a public attraction. We are both very excited to go and experience this historic hospital. Our love for abandoned places and haunted areas has brought us to a few good spots in the past so to add this one to our list is pretty awesome.

I am also looking forward to having a day to relax, something I rarely get to do. We are staying in a cottage on a historic farm and the surrounding area is really gorgeous. Exactly what we both need right now. Some peace and quiet and chill time. But of course, to start off the 2 day vaca, Pennhurst it is.

Because Halloween is this month, stuff like this helps keep that creepy vibe throughout the month. This takes me back to when my friend and I were in California and visited Alcatraz. Even though it was during the day, the whole place was dark inside. You were really able to get a feel of the environment and sense the history while you walked around. Of course, I was running around like a mad woman trying to get as many photos as I could, but I did stop here and there to take it all in. Definitely a memory I will never forget.

The photo below was one I took while we exploring the jail. There was something about how the light came in through the window and just lit up the decaying walls so perfectly, as if they were glowing. The worn tiles on the floor truly showed its years of use but had aged to a pretty metallic under the sunlight. The space was hauntingly beautiful.

When it comes to fear, we all wish we weren’t afraid of certain things. However, sometimes its this emotion that can awaken the soul and truly inspire. I have always loved nightmarish movies, scary stories, and haunted places. There is just something about being scared, the thrill of the unknown, that is invigorating. It’s been quite some time but I am truly ready.
