Inspiration Photo Friday: Fallen Souls

It’s a sad time when people you know or knew have passed away. Even if you are not close with them, it hits you at the core, and forces you to put life in perspective. Unfortunately, I have had many people in my life leave this Earth too soon, both family and friends. It is certainly not something I like to think about or remember, considering the upsetting thoughts that remain.

Yesterday, I heard, yet again, that a friend I knew growing up has died. I don’t know all the facts and am not even sure how it happened but it upsets me, to say the least. His name is Mike and he was a really good guy. We were neighbors in an apartment complex when I was a teenager and saw each other pretty much every day for the time I lived there. When I got older, around 15 or so, I started to hang out with him and his friends a little more, which led to us becoming closer. Back in the day, we surely had good times.

We roamed the streets together, explored different types of drugs together and got into trouble together. We were all a crew and Mike was someone who you could just count on. At least I did. About 10 or so years ago, his brother died of an overdose, which surprised us all. I was still living in New Jersey at this point so my mother and I went to the funeral. Years passed since I saw Mike but just recently, about 8 months ago, I saw him and a few other guys from our old crew at a benefit for a friend. It was really nice to see them all. I am so happy, especially now, that I got to see Mike and catch up. Who knew it would be the last time I would be able to?

There are fallen souls all around us. We don’t want to think of it but we know some people just let the worst of life get to them. It’s sad in so many ways. Every time I saw Mike nothing had really changed. When we talked, it seemed like everything was the same. I definitely couldn’t say that about my life as I have moved on and explored so many new things. I think some people just get stuck. Although they have made their own choices in life to be where they are, maybe it would have been different if they were led down a brighter path.

Take the time to appreciate who you have in your life and surround yourself with positive people. When you know a soul who has fallen, just hope they are in a better place. Picture them smiling and feeling happy, once and for all. I now have another friend who will be remembered and memories that shall be locked away forever. Tucked for good in a place that no one can get to. There, they will live on and be safe. Something I surely wish for Mike…xo

Designing with Dark Wood Flooring

With so many choices available today, choosing wood flooring for your home is an exciting process. Hardwood flooring adds richness and value to any room, and that is particularly true with a darker-toned flooring choice. Flooring in deep hues of dark chocolate brown or ebony black can create a bold statement, especially in large rooms.

Hardwood floors are available in traditional solid wood, which can be sanded and refinished over the years. Because it is solid, it expands and contracts with the changes of humidity levels in the home, and it isn’t suitable for high humidity areas.

Engineered hardwood floors are the perfect alternative. Engineered flooring is produced with several layers of stacked hardwood that is bonded together from pressure and heat. As a result, it is far more resistant to humidity changes. This makes it the perfect choice for basements, attics or humid climates.

In addition to the familiar plank-style or tongue and groove flooring, it is also available in parquets or multimedia styles like stone. More whimsical patterns, such as interlocking jigsaw pieces, add even more interest. Dark flooring paired with crisp white walls provides the perfect blank canvas. Add splashes of color using artwork, furniture, and other accessories. If white isn’t your style, the traditional neutral color palette, complete with gray and beige hues, can complement your dark flooring.

While flooring made of natural wood is the perfect choice for any style of décor, dark flooring tends to lend itself particularly well to a more modern or eclectic approach. Modern furniture, which is frequently manufactured from steel or recycled materials, feels right at home with a glossy, dark hardwood floor. If the room is uncluttered or sparsely furnished, the beautiful dark wood flooring is a work of art underfoot. Along with contrasting cool walls and patterned furnishings, dark flooring gives a very contemporary, clean feel to a space.

Alternatively, dark hardwood flooring in a room with all light upholstery, billowy ivory linens and natural lighting creates a bright and airy space.

Dark flooring also complements rooms like an office or library. The walls can be darker, deeper jewel tones. Homeowners can use heavier fabrics for the upholstery and draperies. Navy blue, dark saffron, deep jade, rich reds and oranges—these colors all create a warm, sophisticated feel.

A home theater system, green-felt pool table, and neon beer lights are all a good start to turning a musty old basement into the ultimate man cave. Man caves are becoming increasingly popular. Furniture manufacturers are designing pieces just for this purpose. Sofas and chairs are being fashioned from car parts and converted oil drums. Fabrics are available in skull motifs or motorcycle patterns. Durable, dark flooring made of hardwood ties it all together.

Whether choosing traditional wood flooring or engineered hardwood floors, wood floors are a beautiful, versatile choice that will last a lifetime. To protect your flooring from water damage or unsightly scuffs or scratches, make sure to use a waterproof varnish. You may also want to purchase felt pads to place under chairs, sofas, and tables.

Guest Post: Affordable Ways to Redesign Your Kitchen

The proverbial quote that we become what we eat has quite some scientific backing to it. Apart from the obvious physical impact that food has on the body, research has shown that it also subtly influences the mind and psyche of a person too. And it is here that remodeling a kitchen – the place where all cooking takes place – gains significance because a well-modeled kitchen keeps the cook and the diner remain in a happy, positive and good frame of mind and spirit. Contrary to belief, giving your kitchen a customized look need not be an expensive affair. Here are ways and ideas of remodeling your kitchen in a thrifty manner, say within $200.

High-impact areas
High-impact areas are those regions of the kitchen where a slight modification results in a grand overall change! Pick such areas for remodeling. For instance, just painting the trims and the front areas of the cabinets can transform the way the kitchen looks. Changing the colors of walls, curtains and accents by itself brings about an eye-catching transformation. So, spending some time to identify the high-impact areas in your kitchen will pay ‘rich’ dividends.

The importance of getting the sequence right
In order to ensure that there is no strain on the wallet, the various remodeling projects should be taken up in a logical order. For example, if the decision is to rearrange the various appliances and cabinets, then any kind of flooring work should not be taken up. Also, one work may hinder or undo the other. Similarly, if painting has been decided upon, then the base work of washing the areas with tri-sodium phosphata (TSP) and then applying a proper primer should be done first.

Once the areas to be worked upon have been selected and working order determined, you can begin remodeling the kitchen. Here are some thrifty ideas to proceed with your work.

Painting
This is the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to remodel the kitchen. A semi-gloss paint ensures that all the food splatters and splashes can be easily mopped and cleaned up. The colors chosen are important here. Remember that dark colors make the space appear smaller than it actually easy and so are recommended to cozy up a place. In case the kitchen is already small, consider using lighter colors.

Fabrics
Custom drapes for the kitchen can be made quite economical if done intelligently. For instance, one could choose the drapes that one wants and then sew up one’s own designs. This will definitely be half the price of a pre-packaged drapes set. In case you are not very sure of your sewing abilities, it would still be a cheaper option to select your drapes and either rent a sewing machine or get the drapes stitched.

Lighting
Light has a magical effect in creating lines, contours and character for a kitchen. Replacing dim lamps with halogens will surely bring in a lot of positivity and energy into the kitchen. To go green and prevent power-wastage, install a dimmer switch so that the halogen can be dimmed as per need. Installing CFL lighting under the cabinetry gives the counter-tops a completely new look and feel. Similarly, you could stock up a few varieties of decorative lights over the kitchen tables.

Steel plating
Stainless steel is durable and also has great looks. However, it is often pricey. You can have the cake and eat it too by choosing to plate the exteriors of the appliances with stainless steel. In this manner, one would also be able to match the different appliances which would otherwise have looked incoherent. Stainless steel could also be used as a substitute for other expensive accents like granite counter-tops and backsplash tiles.

Intelligent use of backsplash tiles and other accents
Backsplash tiles are expensive though they give a great facelift to the kitchen. Instead of covering an entire wall with such backsplash tiles, one could use them as accent pieces, filling the rest of the area with normal, inexpensive tiles. Adding other accents like a clock, a flower vase or a mantelpiece could go a long way in making the kitchen look refreshing. In fact, flowers are a simple yet elegant way of keeping the kitchen ever-new in its looks. A welcome mat at the entrance and a simple curtain adds to the cozy quotient of the place.

Variety definitely brings spice to the looks of the kitchen. It is a good idea to have a look at the photos of well-designed kitchens to get a feel of how remodeling is done. It is a science as much as it is an art.

Inspiration Photo Friday: Timing

As we all know, yesterday was Valentine’s Day. I never really cared much for the holiday but ever since Dan asked me to marry him 2 years ago, on this day, it gave a whole new meaning to the word Valentine. Because he chose this day to propose, it was unexpected and very sweet. He knew I wouldn’t think he would ask me on a holiday since we both felt that’s a little lame to do. Unfortunately, his original plan didn’t work out so he went with plan b. And of course I said yes! Such a sweet and personal experience indeed. It all ended with a gorgeous ring and a big kiss.

Then, exactly a year later, Dan and I moved into our first home we bought together. The process was extremely exhausting and while also planning our wedding, it was quite overwhelming. Closing on the house was very gratifying, I must say. We were officially homeowners! We celebrated with glee. Then we got to work on the DIY renovations before we moved in. It just worked out that the 14th was the day we actually moved in and slept in the house. Even though we were catching our beauty sleep on the floor in the living room, we were super happy and felt very lucky to have our dream home.

We have gone through so much in our house already and the memories just keep on adding up. It has been nice to see all the changes it has gone through since we moved in and made it ours. One of my favorite parts of house is the backyard. It’s cool to see how back there has evolved and changed throughout the year as well.

I just feel that most of the time, it all comes down to timing. Coincidences don’t really exist, fate is constantly at work. The 14th is clearly a meaningful number for Dan and I. This year we had such a great day, another memory to add to the list. I have always been infatuated with numbers and patterns and can’t help looking deeper into things when they happen, especially when it involves numbers. Here are my thoughts on this.

The equation: 1+4=5
Dating back to the Pythagoreans, the number 5 represents love and marriage. Hence, Dan and I getting engaged. One by itself is known as the generator of all numbers and 4, stood for justice and order. As a whole, I see that as a message saying we have come together to start something that will bring order and completion to our lives. Because of our love and fate, we will share vows of marriage and honor. Having moved in our first home a year later only proves our course is positive and evolving.

To dive a little deeper we go into the original equation of when we got engaged:
2+1+4+2+0+1+1=11 {1+1}= 2 – You can read more about this number below

To me, its really that simple. When you include the day we first met and the day we got married, just for fun, it gets even more awesome. Our anniversary is the 11th and August of 2008 is when our relationship officially started.
So you have 8+1+1+2+0+0+8=20{0+2}= 2
The number two is the first female number and stands for opinion and division. This number is an important and memorable number in our existence. Just think of all the pairs there are: body parts, yin & yang, sun & moon, etc.. – you simply “can’t have one without the other” idea. This is a great starting point for Dan and I as our relationship would indeed justify the meaning of this number, we were a pair.

Then you take the date we got married. 5+2+0+2+0+1+2=12 {1+2}= 3
The number three is considered a masculine number and by combining one and two, it represents harmony. I couldn’t think of anything else more perfect to explain our wedding day.

Then to sum it all up you take {2} when our relationship started, {2} when we got engaged and {3} the day we got married and put them all into an equation to equal {7}. The number seven represents the natural world and most cannot exist without it. In religious circles its celebrated for many reasons as well as having importance in geometry, astronomy and science. It is known as the number of the Seeker in astrology and has characteristics that represent both the personalities of Dan and I. Doing all this analyzing is surely interesting!

So, think about the experiences you have had and what part timing has played to make it memorable. I can bet, when you break things down and see its hidden patterns, you will find that everything happens for a reason. And its not about justification, because how your life pans out is certainly supposed to unfold in that way. It’s about delving into deeper realms to understand, on a human level, how to make sense of the things that happen to us. Expand your mind and you will see all the truths and possibilities.
