Loving Neutrals

I have always loved a neutral palette in my home. I think color is a great but I happen to enjoy living in an environment that is relaxing and comfortable. There are so many ways to use neutral colors in your decor and it doesn’t mean just having beige and white the main characters. There are lots of tones to play with. The key is using texture, shape and light correctly so you have a cohesive and all around finished look, without any one thing contrasting too much.

Here are some great examples of how to design an interior space successfully with a neutral palette. I hope they inspire you to use more neutral colors in your home.

The Best of Hipster Decor

By the simple fact that the word “hipster” is mentioned in the title of this post, we know that “best” is a very relative term see-sawing uncertainly back and forth between irony and perfect sincerity, depending on context and possibly the weather. What we can say with certainty is that the following bits of genius are very hipster indeed. Let’s take a look at some of the best of twenty-teen décor.

Jackalope Taxidermy
As far as ironic wall-mounts go nothing quite beats a jackalope. It makes an interesting visual on its own while simultaneously mocking the half of Americans that go out and shoot wild animals and then hang them on their walls for decoration. If your other hipster décor is sparse and people don’t know what to make of your eclectic tastes, you could get some good laughs by convincing more gullible individuals that the jackalope is a real animal; after all, you’ve got its head hanging on your wall.

Vintage Appliances
There is something uniquely charming about an old school refrigerator from the 50s and their rounded shape with the non-regular sized or totally absent freezer compartments. It makes a great statement piece, and unlike newer refrigerators come with a bit of personality. Modern refrigerators typically come in chrome, white, and black, and that’s about it as far as your options are concerned. Older refrigerators were (and are!) available in a much larger variety of colors, and can be used to put a bright splash of color in your kitchen.

Paintings
The beauty of paintings is that while it’s preferred that you only hang up the most exclusive and obscure artists, you’re free to do just about anything you like. If you choose to ironically hang up only the most well-known and tired cliché pieces in art history, like Van Gogh’s Starry Night, you can still maintain a consistent hipster vibe by liking it ironically.

80s Video Game Consoles
Even though most hipsters typically aren’t old enough to remember the 80s they do love those nostalgic gaming consoles. Setting the Sega SG-1000 that you found at a garage sale for 4 dollars next to the iMac on your desk shows people that you have good taste. Remember to keep it hooked up to your flat screen or you’ll look like a poser, though it’s always legitimate to assert that the poser hipster crowd has ruined it by making it way too mainstream for you in the last few months, and that you’re planning on throwing it out.

Record Player/Record Collection
A hipster is not a hipster without a vintage record player and a collection of low quality indie music. If you don’t enjoy indie music you can get away with listening to obscure classical musicians like Berwald, Glazunov, or Tveitt. The most important thing is that when you put on your tunes, no one but your closest co-hipsters should know what they’re listening to. Because of advancing technologies and the evolving hipster genre it’s now appropriate to use not only the hipster standard record players, but also tape decks, and even CD players. Before the decade is out it wouldn’t be terribly surprising if any physical media storage (even by USB stick) becomes a mark of hipsterdom.

Elegant Dining

Having a unique and comfortable dining area is essential for a home. Not only is it the place where your family gathers to eat and share the day’s adventures but its the space where your guests are invited to enjoy your delicious meals. Not to mention, hang out during parties. Like the other rooms in your home, it should reflect your style and be cohesive with the rest of the house.

Not everyone wants the same look and it certainly isn’t expected for you to have a fancy  dining room. There are a lot of different ideas for fancy anyway. Having an elegant space is the path you want to go in. When I say elegant, I mean a space that shows you took the time to make it special. There are plenty of things you can do to create this feel. Here are some ideas that will help bring some inspiration your way.

I love how this space is down to earth and nature inspired. It’s not stuffy or too dark and with all the unique elements thrown in the design, its also interesting enough to inspire conversation. The light wood tones and neutrals create a modern setting while the wallpaper adds that perfect touch of elegance to bring it up a notch. The mismatched chairs and small pops of color give the room an eclectic and fun look.

This french inspired space is surely elegant. With its antique pieces and neutral color scheme, its a beautiful example of a grand dining room. It’s lush, comfortable and simple as well as light and airy. I love how all the elements blend together, this allows the space to feel more open as well.

For a more casual dining area, keep it simple but cozy. This space showcases a rustic feel through modern aesthetic. Bold lines in the furniture help balance the space while the the textured chairs and floor add interest. To bring a soft touch to the room, the white and creamy color palette play a major role here while the flawy curtains keep the the hard edges of the windows looking a bit more delicate.

Classic and elegant, this room shows off gorgeous pieces and features earthy hues for a more dramatic look. This type of rustic elegance has traditional undertones but is still cozy enough to gather and be comfortable. The dark wood floors help ground the space while the lighter tones in the table and chairs help to bring out their beautiful texture.

For those who don’t have much space for dining or even a room to use as a dining area, getting creative with what you have is key. I love how this small space off the kitchen has both a dining room feel as well as a nook type of style. The built in benches really help to save space and can sit a lot of people, the table is casual but elegant in its own right and the chairs add a vintage touch. The light that pours into this area is gorgeous as well. With the addition of the industrial lighting and large map, the room appears fun and laid back which is something all your guest will surely love.

If you love graphic spaces and monochromatic color schemes, than this space is right up your alley. With black and white being the main characters here, the room is highlighted with graphic touches and traditional elements. Playing with contrast is key in a space as bold as this.

Another way to feature your love for monochromatic palettes but in a more subtle and rich way. Earthy tones and elaborate details bring this space to life. Texture surrounds the room from the wallpaper to the curtains and the chairs show off a beautiful pattern to bring in some more interest.

Mixing traditional pieces like this dining table with a casual feel is easy when you surround the main attraction with more laid back and comfortable items. The armchair add a touch of cozy while the bookshelves invite guests to take it down a notch. It’s sort of like combining a living room and dining area in one.

Show off a gorgeous piece like this farmhouse table by allowing it shine all by itself. Pairing it with chairs that aren’t as heavy keep the room light. The amount of light lets nature be a guest as well. In spaces like this you don’t need much.

Modern, artsy and smart, this museum inspired space is a good example of mid-century elegance with a gallery like flair. Simple and to the point, the clean lines and no fuss pieces allow the room to feel classy, unique and smart. The cool color palette helps to keep its cool vibe.

I just love the holidays. Not just because I get to give people gifts and make them smile and get to spend time with family and friends. I really love it because it gives me the excuse to decorate, even though I always think of reasons to do so. Now that Dan and I have the house and a new addition to the family, this Christmas is even more special. We have our little family now which makes so happy.

I wanted to create a warm feeling throughout the house but mostly in the spaces we spend a lot of time in. This would be the living room and dining room. So the weekend after Thanksgiving, I took out our Christmas bin and got started. Boy, was I excited!

I started with all the knick knacks which I have collected throughout the years or have received as gifts. I bought 2 poinsettia plants to add some color and to bring a festive look to the stairwell, I wrapped green garland around the banisters.

Then, for the first time, I hung real garland around our doorway between the living room and the dining room which brought a whole lot of holiday cheer to the space.

Then I hung our stockings, which I bought new this year. I love the white fur faux ones I bought from Pottery Barn for Dan and I. They look so nice, especially with our names on them. The dogs each have their own little stocking as well. I purchased this cute train stocking holder from Bed Bath & Beyond for only $20, which was a great deal. I had been looking for weeks for the perfect holder and I was so happy I found it.

Usually, we put up our little fake tree we have had for years but this year we went and bought a real little tree since its the first holiday in the house. I love it so much. It is decorated with a combination of ornaments that I have had for years growing up as well as Dan’s with some tinsel and silver beads. We sat it on our media cabinet and surrounded it with all our gifts.

In the dining room I kept it simple with a poinsettia plant and the white ceramic tree my Grandmother made for me years ago. There are little hints of the holiday throughout the space.

Our kitchen does’t have much space for much decoration so I just added a little bit of bling and found a perfect spot for a santa doll my Grandmother gave to me.

I hope you all had fun decorating your homes. Don’t you love the holidays!
