If you enjoy traveling through a piece of art and taking a trip among the unique mind of the artist, then you will love Anthony Scutro’s work. Intricately detailed, his illustrations express various thoughts, themes, and ideas that are briefly connected to the whole. You imagine the artist living and breathing through its production, as the time and patience clearly shows with the final product. One can say Scutro really has a knack for layering, by building numerous worlds within one main portal the viewer gets transported to new levels in a constant flow. Tunnels of imagery and ink filled visions lead the way, proving that the paper has a life of its own.

Living in Jersey City, New Jersey, the artist works as a freelance film editor and enjoys all aspects of the outdoors. Having went to grammar school with him, I can say he is an interesting individual with many talents. Scutro started drawing at a young age when he didn’t have much else to do and was inspired by the work of a stone carver at a sportsman show his parents took him too. He was intrigued with the Haida style the man was exhibiting, which is also known for its wildly themed drawings of animals much like the style Scutro has developed. “I would always draw animals and loved how they had one amimal morph into the next. I thought it would be cool to do my own spin on it…Animal shapes tend to fit into each other and I also can distort them to make it work,” he states.

In some cases, the artist also ties his works together by a certain theme. You will notice the owl above filled with skulls, the orca filled with black and white animals, and some others not included here like an octopus contained with eyes.

Scutro is always trying to reinvent his work and challenging himself with new ideas. He is now experimenting with other types of imagery outside the realm of animals such as devoting a work to interesting people he knows. “I try to show someone’s life in a picture. I interview them and write everything down, and then depending on what I think is more important to that person, I make it bigger and design it so you follow the path between the light and the dark and get a blueprint of that person’s life and what they love,” he says.

Could Have Done Better

Besides drawing, Scutro also enjoys the art of carving and has continued to create Native American peace pipes. He says it all started when his friend showed an interest of having one incorporated into his wedding. Upon looking for one he thought would make a great gift, he was unsatisfied and decided to make one himself. This favor for a friend eventually developed into a hobby where he now masters his craft.

“Pipes are just really fun to make…They’re made out of antler and wood that’s aged for two years or more and some of them also have tubing and plumbing fixtures so there’s a modern edge to it. They’re all built, painted, and have things carved into them and then I use a nontoxic protective seal so it can be preserved,” says Scutro. I have seen this pipes first hand and I have to say they are really beautifully made. You can tell he loves the process and puts so much care into his work.

There is so much to explore in Scutro’s work and I believe there will be much more to come from this artist. You can view more of his work on his website and contact the artist himself to commission a piece. He has recently exhibited his work in various art shows including Two Doors Salon in Hamilton Park, NJ on June 7th and being a part of Four Word Progress: A Group Change of Perspective in Jersey City, which recently had its opening reception this past July 9th.

“I simplify life through my art by making it black and white because life never is actually in black and white. My work tells a story of a person or place or mindset through a puzzle of images.” ~ A. Scutro for Four Word Progress

Monochrome Wedding Palettes

There are endless possibilities to colors and decor for your wedding. It’s all a matter of what you love and your taste profile. I think people mostly pick their color scheme first and move forward from there, which isn’t a bad way to go. I always say, choose your theme first and then everything should fall into place. But you can have so much fun with color, for sure.

What if you just chose one color for your special day? It may seem boring to some and maybe even strange to most, but having a monochrome palette could be very pretty if its done right. Now, just because you are using one color, that doesn’t mean your wedding will be an abundance of black or overwhelming amount of pink. You have to look beyond the color wheel and go deeper in the color you have chosen to use. By showcasing different tones and shades and playing with texture, you could have a gorgeous array of monochrome bliss.

Here are some great examples and inspiration of successful monochrome weddings. Hopefully, it will help broaden your understanding of this palette style and allow you to have fun with all the possibilities.

White
With an all white wedding, you can play with soft hues and pale tones. There are many variations of this color, you just need to explore the possibilities. This palette can be romantic, luxurious, country, city chic, vintage & antique, shabby chic and more, depending on your theme.

Pink
An all pink wedding can be tricky but it can be done. Play with the lighter hues of this color, pastels work well together when they are in the same family. If you decide to go with a deeper or brighter shade of pink, just use it for pops here and there or it can overpower the event. You could make pink work for a modern wedding and also a more vintage style wedding.

Blue
The color blue works with a lot of theme and its easy to incorporate. There are so many pretty shades of it too. Whether its a nautical style wedding you are planning or a spring event, blue will definitely add class to the overall style.

Green
Using green is super easy if you are having a nature inspired event. Your venue, if outside, can act as the main decor and all you need to incorporate are elements within your theme and palette. I would stray from using Crayola tones and stick with more natural moss, lime and pastels.

Black
Having an all black wedding is a tough one. There have to be white elements thrown in here and there to break up the dark color or your guests will feel like they are at a night club or goth party! If that is what you are going for, than feel free, but I think most wedding decor is not going in that direction. Use various shades of black, gray tones could be really nice and classic. If done right, it can all look very chic and grand.

Gray
This color can be used so many ways. Gray is a beautiful hue that can easily represent many styles. It’s classic and vintage at the same time.

abandoned, basement, black and white, buildings, horror, new jersey, park, photography, Skillman, skillman village, somerset county, stairs, stairwell, State Village for Epileptics

I took this photo back in 2006 when I lived in Jersey. It’s a place in Skillman called Skillman Village, a little town filled with a school, living quarters, playgrounds and even a small hospital and fire department. Founded in 1898, it was once the State Village for Epileptics but has been abandoned since 1998. Last year, the town started its $15 million dollar demolition to turn it into the new Somerset County Park. I am happy I got to visit twice before this because it is an interesting place to explore.

There are many photos I took this day which I will eventually share in a post but I chose this one for inspiration photo friday for a reason. It is the last building I went in before I was caught and escorted out of the village. This was the first photo I took going into the basement and only two more followed.

I found the stairwell intriguing even though it looked like a scene in a horror film. It was dark, dreary and dirty and the basement was the same. From looking at this image I imagine a whole world of possibilities of where it could lead to. It really does get you thinking and that is what inspiration is all about. Although it may not be the happiest of photographs, it surely lures you in and forces your imagination to run wild. This is exactly why I captured it.

Classic Black & White Weddings

black and white, classic, events, flowers, kim kardashian, luxury, weddings

There are tons of people out there that dream of a classic black and white wedding. Sure, it can be beautiful, but that is if it’s done right. Every designer has their own opinion of what looks good and what doesn’t so this is clearly my own. I try to inspire people with unique ideas and push them to customize their personal spaces and events so it represents them. Hopfeully resulting in great design.

We all know Kim Kardashian recently got married. Her wedding was a huge event that cost way more than I will make in 3 lifetimes. I guess since she had endless funds you would expect her big day to look spectacular. I think it was the opposite. First of all, there was nothing done that was special or unique. Second, there was way too much of everything. Totally overdesigned. Third, from the photos I saw it looked kind of boring.

Those are three things a wedding should not be. And what ever happened to the romance and intimacy of sharing your vows with the one you love? Obviously, that wasn’t on Kim’s mind. Here are a few elements of her day that surely didn’t inspire me.

Colors
Even though this was a black and white wedding, I feel the black overpowered the white immensely. It makes everything look so dark and masculine. The seating area looked like an event for a mens magazine more than a wedding. The ivory bouquets just fade away and its too bad because they were one of the very few elements that were actually pretty.

Overdone Elements
I’m not a big fan of big and tall centerpieces but as long as people can see each other and talk its not the worst it can be. Unfortunately, what was done here just added to the abundance of overapplied design. How many chandeliers can you have before the whole place looks gaudy and old fashioned? Less than what Kim had for sure. These were over the top and unessasary. None of it looked classic at all.

Stuffy Atmosphere & Bad Design
The tables had so much stuff on them I wouldn’t be surprised if the guests felt a little claustrophic. The first thing I noticed about the photo below was the table card. It looks like clip art and somewhat cheesy. Again, that unique artsy design element was nowhere to be found. On paper elements such as invites, seating cards, etc…is where your creativity can soar. But I guess if you’re not creative or have a good designer doing the work, it just won’t be successful.

Cake Design
And then we get to the wedding cake. Granted, you don’t have to have one. My fiance and I are having cupcakes instead because they are more our style. Plus, a little more fun. However, you should want your cake to match the style of the event which Kim did do. Unfortunately, this was a disaster as well.

Personally, I don’t like when people think they are king and queen status. This cake was friggin huge. But at least it could’ve looked somewhat beautiful if it was all white. Those two black sections just ruin the whole thing. A better way to incorporate the black is to use it for the ornate details which was actually quite gorgeous. It would of made them stand out more without being so overdone.

So, to sum it all up: Never have too much of something. Regardless of what you think or like, it will look overdone. Just because you love a certain pattern or color doesn’t mean you should see it everywhere. Why suffocate your guests with an overabundance of one element when you can incorporate numerous ideas into your design. It will only reflect your creativity. Also, remember that classic means clean lines and smart design. You can have a luxury feel at your event without going overboard and looking gaudy and old fashioned. And you can certianly have a classic feel without it being black and white.

Be smart and do your research! Here are a few classic weddings that were done right. A little inspiration to leave you with 🙂
