I’m sure you remember making pinwheels when you were younger. They’re certainly a craft that brings back memories for me. Whether they’re handmade or seen on lawns spinning in the breeze, these nostalgic objects always seem to add a touch of whimsy.

All you need are a few items to create them and it’s something you can do with your children as well. Mine are meant purely for decoration and would be perfect for any gathering or party. You can sit them in vases, jars or baskets and even hang them if you want. They really allow you to get creative and wow your guests.

Decorative Pinwheels

{Materials} Decorative card stock paper, pin fasteners, pencil, ruler, straws, hole puncher and scissors.

First, figure out what size you want it to be and make sure it’s a perfect square. Use a ruler to draw light lines from each corner to the one across from it. This will allow you to find the middle. Then, depending on your size, you want to mark a small dot about an inch away from the middle on each line.

Cut along the lines to each new mark and take either side and bring it to the middle. Make sure whatever side you pick, you do the same with each section. You want the pinwheel to be uniform so it looks like it’s going in one direction.

Decorative Pinwheels

Take a hole puncher and punch a small hole in the middle. Make sure all the section corners are folded toward the middle. Add a paper straw to the back, punch a small hole in the top and with a pin fastener, secure everything and fasten.

Decorative Pinwheels

It shouldn’t take much time to do this. The real fun is choosing unique and decorative paper so you have different patterns and colors. Make all different sizes and go nuts. If you don’t want to use straws, just attach string to one of the sections and hang. Both ways of showcasing them will look awesome.

I’m always thinking of ways to reuse objects in my home. Recycling things and making new uses for them is a great way to gain inspiration. Plus, you get bonus points for repurposing something you already have. There are plenty of things laying around your house you can redesign. This project uses something everyone has — an old cassette case.

DIY Business Card Holder

{Materials} a clear cassette case and art materials of your choice.

This project is very simple. It’s basically just taking the cassette case and folding it backwards. The real challenge is designing it.  Not that it’s hard, but there are just so many ways to do it.

First, take a clear cassette case and open it all the way. Stand it up on a table or desk and put some business cards in the holder. It’s that easy!  I happen to like it clear, but you can style it up any way you like.

Some ideas for designs are:

  • using decorative tape
  • painting it with acrylic paints
  • using permanent marker to color or draw a design on it
  • decoupage a design using decorative paper
  • use stickers to add some cute touches
  • cover with fabric by using some glue or double sided tape

I hope these ideas help you out. Get creative or keep it simple. I’m sure people will be impressed when they step up to see how you’ve showcased your cards. Pure genius! Avoid creating waste with artful thinking and good ideas will come out it.

I am always thinking of ways to reuse objects and items I have around the house. Recycling what you have is a great way get inspired as well as help with Earth. This project is easy, affordable and useful. Everyone needs a calendar. Whether its for scheduling your time or simply to know what day it is, my DIY desk calendar comes in handy.

{Materials}

  • CD case
  • paper
  • ruler
  • art materials of your choice

You can do this project any way you want. There are just three steps you need to follow. First, you need a clear CD case. Who doesn’t have one of these around the house? The traditional size works best. This will be the stand for the calendar.  All you need to do is open it and disconnect the front. Then turn it around and connect it again. This allows the case to stand up.

DIY Desk Calendar

Once you have that figured out, you need to choose your paper. Any kind will work. Just be aware of the space where it will go. You probably have 1/4 of an inch to work with so make sure the paper is not too thick. I would suggest card stock but if you only have regular computer paper, that will do just fine. Even watercolor paper would look great.

Now all you have to do is cut the paper to size, design it and slide it in the cd case. If you cut the paper to 4 5/8 x 4 5/8 you should be fine.  If you are using a computer program to design the calendar use 4.625 x 4.625 inches.

DIY Desk Calendar

Get creative with this project. You will be looking at the calendar everyday so it should reflect who you are and make you smile. It can be hand drawn, painted, a collage or digitally designed. Think outside the box and get to work!
