I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for awhile. My best friend Meg and her daughter Leona Faye are coming to visit later tonight and I can’t wait. I don’t get to see them much because they live in Jersey, so when they come, I am always super excited.

Besides catching up and hanging at the house, we are going to Benner’s Farm tomorrow for an afternoon of pumpkin picking and visiting with the farm animals. I have been wanting to go this particular farm for a few years now so its nice to finally go. And to spend some time with my favorite girls and all the awesome animals will surely make for a great day. After, we will carve our pumpkins and have a relaxing night.

Below is a photo I took back in 2011 at the Queens County Farm Museum where we had our wedding. Being at a farm just feels like home for me. The fresh smells, bountiful gardens, and of course the beautiful animals that really call it home. I have always loved how aware they are most of the time. When they look at you, you really feel it. Making contact with an animal is not like a human, it’s very different. There is just something about it that truly makes my heart skip a beat.

I have taken countless photographs of animals along my journeys and each one of them is unique and fascinating. They have such wonderful personalities, and to witness that is a gift. I love when I visit a farm or sanctuary and know in my heart the animals there are taken care of and safe. We all deserve to have a home sweet home.

So this weekend, my husband and I are taking a little trip to Spring City, Pennsylvania for a 2 day getaway. The whole reason we are going is to visit Pennhurst Asylum, an authentic haunted place that been transformed into a public attraction. We are both very excited to go and experience this historic hospital. Our love for abandoned places and haunted areas has brought us to a few good spots in the past so to add this one to our list is pretty awesome.

I am also looking forward to having a day to relax, something I rarely get to do. We are staying in a cottage on a historic farm and the surrounding area is really gorgeous. Exactly what we both need right now. Some peace and quiet and chill time. But of course, to start off the 2 day vaca, Pennhurst it is.

Because Halloween is this month, stuff like this helps keep that creepy vibe throughout the month. This takes me back to when my friend and I were in California and visited Alcatraz. Even though it was during the day, the whole place was dark inside. You were really able to get a feel of the environment and sense the history while you walked around. Of course, I was running around like a mad woman trying to get as many photos as I could, but I did stop here and there to take it all in. Definitely a memory I will never forget.

The photo below was one I took while we exploring the jail. There was something about how the light came in through the window and just lit up the decaying walls so perfectly, as if they were glowing. The worn tiles on the floor truly showed its years of use but had aged to a pretty metallic under the sunlight. The space was hauntingly beautiful.

When it comes to fear, we all wish we weren’t afraid of certain things. However, sometimes its this emotion that can awaken the soul and truly inspire. I have always loved nightmarish movies, scary stories, and haunted places. There is just something about being scared, the thrill of the unknown, that is invigorating. It’s been quite some time but I am truly ready.

accomplishment, art, design, education, envy, honest, life, poetry, seven deadly sins, true

I often think about my life and how different I am today, than from who I was before. It’s not like I am a completely different person but I have grown tremendously. My BFA show, back in May of 2006, was an accomplishment I will always be proud of. Not just because I was finally graduating after 7 years of school but it proved that all my hard work truly paid off.

I explored my subject a few years early and really learned a lot about myself as an artist and an individual during the process. I always knew my work would explore my life and experiences but I really needed to feel comfortable with doing that in such a way that was true to who I was. When it came down to it, the show has to be honest and raw or it wasn’t going to make the statement I wanted it to. Opening myself up for the world to see through my love for photography, as well as my skills as a designer, was the most honest I could be.

My show covered life events and thoughts expressed through the seven deadly sins. This was the platform I chose to connect with the viewer, something familiar. Each one included a manipulated photo and some text that described that event/time in my life. As I look at these today, it’s like I am visiting an old friend. This show acted as a closed door and then my future from then on was a new one opening.

One particular piece, Envy, is a special one. It’s expressing my love for the future me because I know in my heart she will be more confident and wiser. In addition, the issues that remained at the time in my life would no longer take hold of her. She was beautiful and strong. Today, I feel I am that woman. It is just so awesome to look back 7 years ago and know that the future me I envied back then, is the woman I have grown to be.

“I look at her, satisfied. Envy undertones. The future me, beautiful.”

I hope this inspires you to peek into your past and see how much you’ve grown as well. We all have moments of awakening and realization. When they come in as clear as they should, it justifies everything you have lived up until now. In another decade I hope to look back and feel the same way I am now. As long as you live your best life and be true to who you are, the future you will always be the person you wish to be now. Why? Because that person lives within you and just needs a little light to come alive.

Abbe Wright, art, art school, comparisonitis, design, experiences, growth, history, ideas, individuality, inspiration photo friday, life, life story, lifestyle, Mind Evolution, money, Onlyness, stree

The other night I read a great little article written by Abbe Wright. It was about the ticking clock syndrome, when people measure their lives against others milestones. It really resonated with me as I sometimes feel my age should dictate where I am in my life. Realistically, this isn’t true. People move at their own pace and depending on the experiences you have had, everyone will be at different stages of their life.

This one quote pretty much sums up the article. I wanted to share it so others can take something positive from it as well.

“Onlyness is the spot in the world only you inhabit-a mix of the history, experiences, and ideas that make up your life story. If you deny it by engaging in ‘comparisonitis’, you’ll miss your true value.”

We need to focus on our own lives and know in our hearts we are where we belong. At times when we feel we should be doing something better or different, than its time to change our path. But in no way should we compare our lives to others. If you are feeling down because others are getting engaged and married but you are single, cheer up. Ask yourself if thats what you really want right now anyway? If so, then get out there and be positive, someone will come your way. If not, live it up. Just because the people around you are having children, doesn’t mean its time to be parent too. Your life journey is unique and not like everyone else’s. Your time will come.

“There’s no schedule. Just admire your own kick-ass individuality“, is something we should all remember. Below is the poster I made for my BFA show before graduating college. It represents all my hard work and dedication. I was a little older than most when I got my degree, but at 27 years old I have been through so much, and with a ton of experience and I felt so ready and confident to move forward. The fact that my show was about my life, really gave a nod to saying goodbye to the past and greeting my future with a smile.

My greatest achievement up until then was graduating art school and creating a successful first gallery show. I was extremely proud of myself. Months later I scored my first full time graphic position in Long Island and moved from Jersey within two weeks, moved into my first apartment, and even met someone who I was with for a few years. And of course, things got in the way of my plans, but with persistence I made it happen. After six months I got laid off and had trouble finding another job, so I had to do what I could to make ends meet. Eventually, after another move, my relationship ended. I felt my life was at a standstill.

Who would have known just a few months later I would meet my current husband. I do have to say it was perfect timing. Since then, life has been challenging but I feel very lucky to be a wife, a homeowner, and a business owner – all of which I deserve to be. I have come to realize, even more so then before, that the life chosen for me wouldn’t be easy. It wouldn’t be filled with lots of money and extravagant gifts or a lifestyle where I can be carefree and less stressed. However, it has been one of many opportunities, lessons, love, change, and adventure. All of which enabled me to grow up fast and become the woman I am today. I have accomplished so much so far and no other life can compare. It’s my onlyness I live for and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
