My husband and I are are still doing small improvements throughout our house. And even though there is always something that needs to be done, a lot of the main projects have been finalized, which is awesome. We have worked so hard making this house a home and I love it more and more each day.

Recently, we tackled the small hallway on our second floor. The original hardwood floors  were not taken care of. Besides the horrible color the previous owners stained them with, they were in bad shape. I’ve had to keep small rugs down since we’ve been here to cover the area because if you walked by barefoot, splinters are definitely a sure thing. It’s been bothering me for over a year and I had enough. It was time to get this project checked off the list.

It was a little bit of a process, like everything else is, but within a week we finished it. It took Dan 2 days to sand when he was done, I took over. Our original plan was to stain it over, but after I thought about it I decided to paint it gray like the stairwell. It just made more sense. So after 2 coats of paint and a layer of polyurethane, the floor was done. I also cleaned up the molding and repainted that as well so it all looked fresh. We are both so happy with the results.

Buying a house is a huge accomplishment. What’s an even bigger accomplishment is renovating it yourself and making it yours. It’s much easier to purchase a property and keep it as is, but what’s so fun about that? My husband and I take so much pride in all the work we put into our home and with every project we finish, it seems to love us more. And even though I am one to get things done asap, I have learned to relax a bit when it comes to stuff like this. Doing a little at a time, will pay off. It can’t all get done in one day!

Below is the before and after of our floor. I am so excited to finally have it done. Doing small projects like this on a regular basis keep you in a steady groove and help you realize that when things are done a little at a time, you can appreciate them so much more. Overloading yourself with a million things to do just isn’t worth the stress. Pace yourself and enjoy every moment because its not just the final results that are gratifying, its the process and journey you’ve taken to get there.

My husband and I are finally fully renovating our kitchen. It has been a little over a year we are in the house and feel its time to take on the project. What was done before was only temporary until we had the funds and the time to get it done so you can imagine how excited I am to see my dream kitchen alive.

This is the first space I’ve designed from scratch and have really enjoyed the process. I want an authentic vintage kitchen so collecting items for the space has taken some time. We started a few months ago, visiting antique shops every weekend until we collected everything we were looking for. The whole room will be free standing pieces, nothing is installed or connected to the walls like cabinetry would be. So finding exactly what we wanted and making sure we had enough storage space was a task all in itself.

We were lucky to have found the perfect pieces at great prices, which helped out a lot considering our budget wasn’t big. Everything has been painted the same color to bring cohesion to the space. Whites and creams will grace the room beautifully. Thanks to Ikea, we were able to get a butcher block countertop at an affordable price and the sink cabinet is being built from scratch, another design I am excited about. When you can’t find what you want, build it!

We purchased wood planks for the ceiling and painted them white as well. And because of our budget, we chose laminate planks for the floor in a nice neutral, honey tone. The new schoolhouse lighting I chose will truly bring the vintage charm to the space and the large piece of art we had custom framed will look gorgeous. Every detail was thought of when it came to this renovation. Floor plans were drawn, measurements were taken, and I considered every inch of the room so we can really maximize the space. I’d have to say, its the most dedication I’ve had for a project in a long time and I know it will all pay off.

So for this inspiration photo friday, I wanted to share my inspirations for our kitchen renovation, since this project has been a focus for some time now. I looked to these and saw elements I loved. Then made them work for our space and combined them in way that worked with our budget. I feel its really important to have a starting point, some kind of inspiration to work off of. And these truly helped my creativity and determination.

We are currently in the middle of the process and are ready for demo. Everything is getting ripped out, walls and all. Besides my uncle helping us with the drywall, Dan and I are doing this all by ourselves and we couldn’t be more excited. We are DIY all the way and when its all finished, we can look back and be proud of what we accomplished. It just proves that with true dedication, you can do anything. Check back for my before and after photos soon as well as a detailed post about the project.

Eclectic Not Hectic

When you’re moving into your first place you’re likely to end up with a hodgepodge blend of furniture. A couch from your parents’ basement. A dining room table and chairs from grandma’s attic. A – well, you get the idea. The same thing tends to happen when you’re furnishing and decorating a home on a budget. A desk from your neighbor’s yard sale. Throw pillows from the clearance bin at Target. So on and so forth.

The end result has the potential for greatness in the form of a truly unique space wrought with personal style. However, the end result also has the potential to leave your home looking like a cluttered thrift store. The question then becomes how to keep eclectic home furnishings and decor from looking hectic and thrown together. Here are some options:

Start with a base coat
Try to pick one color that will serve as a unifying shade in the space. For example, white is often a good choice because pretty much everything goes with it, and if you’re moving into an apartment there’s a good chance the walls will be white or some shade of off-white. Get many items in your base coat color and let other items that you can’t control the appearance of (ex. your Aunt Anita’s love seat) act as pops of color in the space.

Clear out clutter
Try being a minimalist to downplay how eclectic your belongings are. Allow the natural features of the space such as large windows, rich wood floors, or exposed brick to act as accessories to your furnishings.

Force a match
If you’re truly concerned about your furniture being diverse consider altering it to match. For example, you can buy slipcovers for couches and love seats online without racking up a huge bill. In addition, you can paint and refinish many pieces of furniture including dressers, tables, entertainment centers, picture frames, and bookcases to make them look more alike.

Add a pinch of mix and match
In your eclectic space, try sprinkling in elements that match one another. For instance, throw pillows and picture frames that are the same color. You could also try a throw rug and a throw (blanket) draped across the back of a chair that match. These elements, here and there, that do match can help tie the rest of your decor together or at least make the rest of your decor not seem so obviously miss-matched.

A square peg in a round hole
Don’t worry about making sure every aspect of your furniture match. For instance, if you’ve managed to secure furniture in similar shades don’t worry about the shapes being different and vice versa.

Find a peace keeper
If the pieces in your home have colors that traditionally conflict with one another find a piece that can unify them. For example, if you have a green sofa and a wicker chair with orange striped cushions look for accessories that can unite those two pieces such as throw pillows, wall art, or a rug that have both green and orange.

Embrace the eclectic
Having a truly eclectic space isn’t bad. It’s bohemian. Don’t be afraid (or embarrassed) to simply embrace a space full of eclectic furnishings and decor. Mix-matched items can make a space feel relaxed and casual. They can say, “hey, a free spirit and mellow personality lives here.” There’s nothing wrong with that.

At some point or another in life, most of us are going to be living in a space with eclectic furnishings and decor. There are certainly things that can be done to help tie pieces together and make the space feel more planned out. However, on the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with embracing the randomness. The bottom line is to go for furnishings and decor that you love, things that truly speak to you. If you do that, your space will never feel hectic and thrown together – it’ll always feel like home.

Welcome Spring with an Easter Tablescape

Having guests of over for holidays can be so much fun. Especially, if you love to be the host, like me. I don’t usually have people over for Easter and won’t be a host this year, but it is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate.

Ever since I was a kid, my Mom would put together an awesome basket for me and hide it. The adventure of looking for my Easter surprise excited me every year. Now that I’m older, my husband carries on the tradition because I love it so much. I can’t wait to see where he hides it this year!

There are, however, lots of people hosting Easter dinner come Sunday. Dressing your table for the holiday should be fun and spring inspired, yet simple and easy to do. I personally think the theme should be more focused on the season and its natural elements, with a few touches of Easter charm mixed in. You could definitely go overboard with bunnies and eggs, so keep it minimal, yet festive.

Here are some great ideas I hope will inspire an amazing table for you and your guests. Enjoy!
