I have always liked Seattle band, Sunny Day Real Estate and recently I went through my music collection and came across Diary. Their debut studio album, released in 1994, was unique and told a strong story. Comparable to other records from bands in their genre, it was an introduction to what we know as emo, and set a strong standard for future sound.

This is definitely one of my all time favorite albums and having listened to it recently, it just brought back all that love. My favorite tracks are Seven, Round, Shadows, 48, and Sometimes, but the whole album is totally worth a listen and more. William Goldsmith exhibits such a genius display of drumming while the melodic yet striking guitars by Dan Hoerner and Jeremy Enigk add such intensity to the music. Although different, Enigk’s vocals seem to create a clear path to your heart, with honesty and passion as a driving force. And being a bassist myself, I can appreciate Nate Mendel’s ability to give the sound the fullness it needs on the backend to be as strong as it is.

The album artwork, created by Chris Thompson, is graced with Little People and a variety of pastel hues. It displays beautiful shading and light work as well as a sense of urgency, which can correlate to the bands sound. This is one album that will always have a place in my heart. It brings me back to a youthful and free time and reminds me that the music industry was once a validated entity, which is surely not what it is today.

Portugal. The Man is a band from Portland, Oregon that started playing together in high school while they lived in Alaska. Their first studio album, Waiter, You Vultures, was released in 2006. This was the first time I heard them. Immediately, I like their sound. I thought it was unique and different.

The album art is colorful and graphic, full of vibrancy. The illustrative touches really bring interest to the work and the contrast against the white really sets a nice tone. The hand lettering is a cool touch as well.

I have liked Depeche Mode for many years now. Although they formed a year after I was born I connected with their music and listened to it throughout my life. Vocalist, Dave Gahan, possesses such an interesting and unique voice that nobody can match and even though they are considered an electronic band, they incorporate so many other beautiful elements in their sound.

Their 1986 album, Black Celebration, was a slightly different tune than their previous music. With somewhat of a darker spin, this fifth album consisted of fantasy driven sounds with an edge that carries a bit of sadness we can all connect with. On the other hand, the somewhat gloomy lyrics are paired with bright pops of synth genius which really helps the songs to shine. I can remember listening to this album while I was a teenager. My favorite tracks are Black Celebration, Question of Lust, A Question of Time, Stripped, and New Dress. Today when I listen to it, boy does it take me back.

The album art is a good fit for the sound of this album. It’s dark and unusual with pops of color and of course has an 80s feel to it. The image of a city building is used as a backdrop to showcase part of their logo, upside down M, and projected tulips. I like how the whole piece has a collage styled look while also highlighting shadow and light in the imagery. All in all, a good representation of the music on the album.

{ This post is dedicated to my best friend Heather who is the biggest Depeche Mode fan I know. One can say she is a little obsessed ♥ }

Four tet has been a favorite of mine for years. With a mix of hip hop, electronic, jazz, and more, London artist Kieran Hebden brings such a unique style to the industry. Starting out as a member of the band Fridge, he later explored music on his own and released his first single in 1997. While continuing with his solo career he also has worked with talented and well known musicians such as Aphex Twin, Bloc Party, Black Sabbath, and Thom Yorke to name a few.

His fourth album, Everything Ecstatic came out in 2005 and is filled with quirky mixes and smart beats. It has a high energy sound and happy youthful vibe. It makes for good driving music as well as a background tunes for a party. The six song on the album, And Then Patterns, is particularly one I love. It has such a beautiful mix of instruments and just flows so nicely. Another favorite, Turtle Turtle Up, brings you back to the Nintendo days with elegance.

The album art is vibrant and colorful, like the music it presents. Although the line work seems a little out of control and ecstatic, the design makes sense. Due to the hues chosen for the work, it has an adolescent feel but its fresh and unique at the same time.  All in all, its fun.
