The latest album from Silversun Pickups is surely one of my favorites. Even though I like everything they put out, this one has such amazing songs. It’s one you can listen to over and over again and just love it more. The photograph on the front is really interesting, as it gives a feeling of silence and calm. Kind of like you are living in a quiet spot in the woods. How fitting.

The color palette is filled with earthy hues, both dark and light. Shadows play a huge part as well since nighttime has taken over. It’s nothing over the top but I really like it. A perfect shot for a perfect album.

The cover of Brand New’s album, Deja Entendu, is surely a colorful one. It consists of rich, saturated hues that are intensely darkened around the edges, allowing the center image to really pop. I really like the contrast and use of shadows as well.

This album has always been a favorite of mine and brings me back to my senior year of college when it got a lot of plays on my iPod. There are some songs I must of listened to a hundred times. The cover definitely got my attention but the music backed it up for sure. The color palette would be a good inspiration for a kids room or party, colorful and lively.

I remember when I first saw Dick Tracy back in 1990. I was 11 years old and was in awe of the film’s use of color. As I got older I learned to appreciate it more and felt they did such a good job of keeping that comic book style. From the characters to the costumes, it was truly a success.

Based off the 1930s comic, the story takes place in the city and revolves around a group of gangsters and of course Dick Tracy saving the day. Warren Beatty produced, directed, and starred in the film and had strong intentions for its design. Sticking close to the comic he wanted to only use the colors that graced the original pages while focusing on red, green, blue, and yellow. There was also a concentration on how the scenes were filmed so each were more like vignettes with everything happening in the same shot, this meant the camera was still for most of the movie.

The palette of Dick Tracy is elementary in some aspects but in this case, that’s a good thing. For me, it was one of the first on screen presentations that featured successful artistic development. Even if I was too young at the time to delve into its creative elements, I noticed how unique it was. It really felt like the comic book had come to life.

Besides creating amazing music, Florence and the Machine grace their album covers with nature inspired artwork that seemlessly relates to their sound. I love the earthy hues this particular album showcases and how her image is incorporated into the design. There is a nice contrast to light and dark as well as a beautiful sense of how lighting helps color come alive.
