Moving on with Autumn Tree Study Week we read a few pages from The Magic & Mystery of Trees by Jen Green and learned:

  • the three things trees need to grow
  • anatomy of trees
  • all different shapes they have
  • what it looks like inside of the trunk

We also practiced the letter T and some writing, Elliot drew a tree ring diagram and got crafty by creating his own mosaic tree.

Later we will read a little bit more about the magic of trees and excited for more nature lessons and projects over the next several days.

I just wrapped up a fun project for @thewhimsydays founder Piyali and I am so happy with how it all came out. I have shared the mood board and logo in previous posts and now the website. This is the home for the Morning Basket, a curated, seasonal morning time guide for the early childhood years. The design is pretty streamlined and I made sure the shopping experience was easy, since there will be 2 versions of the guide for each month. It’s welcoming and calm and that is how I view Piyali herself so it’s perfect. Feel free to visit the site and take a look around.

Even if you aren’t choosing to homeschool this is a really nice guide to use in the morning (or any other time that works for you) as an additional source of education and is definitely time well spent with your children. You can learn more at thewhimsydays.com.

To wrap up Autumn Pond Study Week last night after dinner I read a beautifully illustrated book, Over and Under the Pond by Kate Messner, and Elliot added more to his pond chart: beetle, turtle, fish and frog. He was happy that Daddy was part of the lesson too. We are excited to dive into this weeks nature study and can’t wait to get started!

Draw a Line

Being self employed for over a decade has been awesome. It’s hard work but it does get easier. After all these years I feel the toughest challenge I always deal with is drawing a line between work and home/personal life. Always. And even though I feel like I have somewhat of a hold on it, I’m being challenged yet again.

The line is important. It plays a big role in my life and can literally ruin my day if I cross it. Now, I do set hours for myself to work but they get a little blurry sometimes. I try to keep this from happening but I understand it will. I just can’t cross that line.

In order for me to be in the moment and sustain my sanity, I have to be tough and listen to my own rules. Because even though I have the freedom to do what I want with my business, creating a realistic routine and setting boundaries is key.

This means shutting down. There have to be times when I’m not available. No one is always available. And they shouldn’t be. Especially for work. We all deserve lives and should be able to enjoy them. It’s pretty simple. So shutting the work world down is the only way to achieve that. There has to be a time when you step away from the computer, stop answering emails and maybe even switch your phone to ‘do not disturb’ if you have to. And stick with it.

And those boundaries I mentioned are essential to NOT crossing that line. Set them and live by them. Like I said, this is my biggest challenge but I’m working at it everyday. Separation is my solution. And that line reminds me to stay one on side until it’s time to cross over.

What are your boundaries?Does the line challenge you often?
