Directed by Zack Snyder, 300 offers an intense experience visually and emotionally. The story is based off the comic series by Frank Miller and tells the brave tale of the war between the Spartans and Persians. Standing strong, King Leonidas leads the way as the Spartan army follows.   The art production of this film is amazing. With its saturated and cinematic shots, it stays true to the original series beautifully.

The color palette of 300 is very much like the story; deep, intense and dark. However, it comes to life with every scene. Filled with drama, love, endless action and history, it will turn your world upside down and not only get you pumped but at times horrify as well.

Look to this palette for autumn weddings and fall events. The richer colors make an impact as the neutral tones set the stage for unforgettable style.

Elephant impressed me as soon as it started. Being a Gus Van Sant fan, I knew I would enjoy the film but I must say the cinematography was beautiful. Vast scenes of silence and normality get torn apart with violence that is unexplainable.

Based on the events of the school shootings, the story takes place in a suburban town at a local high school. The camera takes you through several of the students day to day while also letting you inside the life of the shooters. Van Sant took an interesting turn with the story and enabled the viewer to feel for the main suspects of this horrible crime. I must admit, Alex was my favorite character.

Although sad, the film is gorgeously created. Astounding shots are captured and due to the long scenes, you obtain a feeling of calm and anxiety at the same time because you know something bad is going to happen. Truly suspenseful to say the least. The imagery captured my heart while the story slowly saddened it. A duality of emotion that is quite disheartening. All in all, a film you must not miss.

The color palette is simple and realistic, one we all are accustomed to seeing every day. Walking outside, attending classes in school, hanging out at the lockers with friends, the everyday palette is perfect for the film. And then at times, the lens will stay on the sky and it will look like the bluest in all the galaxy. A bit of beauty in an everyday mundane world.

It’s been awhile since I posted a new Color in Films palette so I am excited to share one with with you all today. I have redesigned the layout and given the palettes a fresh new look. As of now, they are also exclusive to The Design Inspirationalist and will only be seen here. I hope you enjoy my first palette in a long time as much as I do. Enjoy!

Written and directed by one of my favorite filmmakers, Guillermo del Toro, the story of Pan’s Labyrinth is set in 1944 during the Francoist period in Spain. The main character, Ofelia, is the daughter of a Falangist Captain who discovers a labyrinth that introduces her to many strange but magical creatures. The film joins her fantastical journey in this overgrown world with the real world where her mother is ill and getting worse.

This film is an amazing story of strength, wonderment, childhood and fantasy. The main creature whom Ofelia interacts with gives her three tasks to complete. As the story unfolds sadness takes over with a number of devastating events happening towards the end, both resulting in death. However, a happy ending awaits with Ofelia living on in the underworld with all the creatures of the labyrinth where she is forever free.

The color scheme of the film is dark and cold which reflects greatly on the premise of the story. You will find earthy hues and subtle shimmer that will lead you along a unique and emotional path that is reminiscent of the Secret Garden with a more mature tone. Escape into a world where anything is possible and the unknown is for all to see. Pan’s Labyrinth will surely take you for a ride.

I had to showcase John Dyer Baizley eventually, considering he is such an amazing artist and his band, Baroness, is one of my favorites as well. Since their new album, Yellow and Green, just came out I figured this would be the perfect time. If you don’t know who Baizley is then I am happy to introduce you to his work.

The artist resides in Savannah, Georgia but grew up in a small town in Virginia. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design he moved to Georgia and formed the band Baroness with friends from back home. They have been creating amazing music ever since then. All their albums are designed by Baizley which really gives them a signature look. He also designs cover art for other bands like Pig Destroyer, Flight of the Concords and Blask Tusk.

His work is reminiscent of the art deco style with remnants of gritty texture and clean lines. There is always beautiful movement in his work which keeps it fresh and spontaneous. The fantasy element is a major part as well. With a mixture of nature, animals, women, skulls and other elements, his work is a story of imagination and grace. Clearly influenced by Alphonse Mucha, the softness to this style is uniquely showcased through bold lines and color as well as intricate details.

I chose the cover Baizely did for the band Kvelertak for this first palette because of its earthly colors and romantic feel. There is a sense of power and love that shows through this piece that I connect with. The details and shading are flawless and the colors are soft, feminine and woodland inspired. Then to top it off, the eyes of the owl are intense and captivating as they lure you into the fantastical world of John Dyer Baizley’s mind. That’s what I call a work of art.

{You can listen to Baroness’ new album on NPR and purchase it from iTunes. I highly recommend you check it out as well as all their other albums. Every single one is filled with amazing music that will not only inspire you but get you amped. You can also see more of Baizley’s art at his official blog, A Perfect Monster.}
