Requiem for a Dream is in my top 5 favorite films of all time. I know it may not be the happiest of films but the story really got to me. Not to mention, the genius filmaking from director Darren Aronofsky. Debuting in 2000, the film captures the true essence of addiction and how it can destroy your life. I must admit there are scenes that are hard to watch but the thrilling anxiety and sadness one feels from watching each character fall apart just makes you want to see what is next. Sad but true.

The film takes place in Coney Island and focuses on four characters, Sara and her son Harry, Harry’s girlfriend Marion, and their friend Tyrone. Each of them have a dream but their personal additions and obsessiveness gets in the way and takes them down the wrong path. From drugs and prostitution to weight loss and shock therapy, the story unfolds as each character falls deeper into the hole they created, taking you on a ride of misery and beauty all at once.

Written by Aronofsky and Hubert Selby Jr., and based off of Selby’s original book, this film will take you on a ride filled with emotion and discomfort. The cinematic artistry with its various split screens, in your face close ups, and time lapse photography, helps to bring the viewer in on a personal level. You feel like you know the characters and even though your heart goes out to them, your ability to empathize slowly fades. Eventually, everything falls apart in the end.

With an amazing and talented cast, Requiem will surely throw you for a loop. The soundtrack by Clint Mansell is beautiful and haunting, one the best I have heard. The color palette is a combination of natural hues taken from the three seasons shown in the film, summer, fall, and winter, while darker, more deep tones exhibit the intense scenes. Darkness and light come into play a great deal as shadows embark each character throughout the film. This is surely a piece of work that will stand the test of time.

The Avengers is an action packed film starring the best of the best from the Marvel world. With the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Black Widow, its awesome to see all on one screen together kicking ass and saving the planet. Each of the characters are interesting in their own right so to have them work together was surely a treat.

It starts by Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D, contacting each character to help out with the problem at hand, which is to stabilize the Tesseract and figure out what to do with Loki, Thor’s evil twin who has now entered Earth through a wormhole the Tesseract mistakenly opened. Eventually, Loki gets captured but does find a way to escape, so the adventure continues.

The wormhole ends up being a huge problem because what lies in Asgard on the other side, is able to come through to Earth. So, the Avengers get to work to battle it out and close the wormhole for good, all within the confines of New York City. It’s a majestic and  explosive ending for sure.

The color palette is what we know of the characters and their outfits along with city neutrals and nature inspired hues. The five elements are surely explored in the film. Expect to see bold and bright colors that are weighted down by earthy grays and browns. A nice even playing field for pigment to shine.

Inception is one of those films you will remember forever. Not only do you feel you need to watch it a few times, you actually want to. A genius script, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, tells the in depth story of how the mind can do amazing things. The act of inception, in this case, is to implant an idea in someone’s mind but to do it in such a way that they will never know how it got there and actually feel like they thought of it themselves. A brilliant idea for a film I must say.

The cast was amazing and the effects the film explored were truly mesmerizing. The color palette was somewhat somber and city like. Dark earthy hues such as brown and gray teamed up with a scale of blues, beige, and whites for an all around smart and sharp color scheme. Anything but would not have worked. Bright and saturated choices just wouldn’t have made the proper contribution.

This film had me thrilled and entertained all the way through. Not to mention, giving my brain a workout. Superb production in my eyes. Definitely, one of the best films I had seen in a long time.

Labyrinth is one of my all time favorite films, ever. How can you not love this story? A young girls wish comes true and takes her through a fantastical journey to fix what she created, having her baby brother get taken away by the goblin king, not that she meant for any of this to happen. She realizes her addiction to the fantasy world she escapes to more than often, is actually a real place.

To find her brother, she is led through a labyrinth filled with weird creatures and riddles she must figure out to get to the end. Along the way she makes some friends that she will remember forever and of course memories that will last just the same. A unique film such as this could only come from the one and only Jim Henson and it proves that fairy tales can be loved by all.

The color palette of the film is an abundance of natural hues and earthly tones. From the real world scenes to the labyrinth, nature rules all. Most of the film is shot outside which I love as well. Pops of color are brought in with accessories on the characters and small items so you notice them well against the neutral background. My favorite is the little worm she meets in the beginning. What an adorable little fella!

The soundtrack is fun and lively and the art direction is superb. You will fall in love with all the characters, just like I have, and by then end of the film wish you could take on the adventure as well. A film for all ages, Labyrinth will allow you to explore otherworldly realms of fantasy and take you back to the days where films honored the artistic aspects of moviemaking.
