We started fungus week with some fun projects and lessons. I was also able to find some mushrooms from our yard for us to study, along with a few dried specimens we had from the spring.

  • we learned the parts of a mushroom from the book Molds, Mushrooms & Other Fungi by Steve Parker
  • drew a mushroom in our nature journal and labeled the parts
  • watched a short video from National Geographic, You Didn’t Know Mushrooms Could Do All This, and learned the growth process and so many cool things you can make with mushrooms
  • completed a cut and paste exercise and created a pattern with a mushroom template from printabletreats.com
  • read the poem The Elf and The Dormouse by Oliver Herford
  • checked our fungus project I put together Sunday to see if any mold grew yet, it didn’t

Took a break, a nap, had some lunch and then dove back into our lessons…

  • Spent some time outside for fresh air and explored the yard for mushrooms
  • Read Mushrooms in the Rain by Mirra Ginsburg
  • practiced numbers with my first official lesson design, Mushroom Math
  • made the cutest little mushrooms from egg carton pieces I got from @magichomeschoolbus

We also practiced the letter F and opposites with some fun worksheets. Besides having a headache all day and Elliot having about 3 tantrums, we checked a lot off our list and had a good day.

  • practiced numbers and lines with worksheets from @lively.little.home
  • painted pumpkins (mine is the tiny black one)
  • practiced writing the letter P and letter related worksheets
  • counted 31 pumpkin seeds for the month of October
  • painted a pumpkin scene and added pumpkin seeds, Elliot wanted to make a smiley face
  • made little pumpkins with pipe cleaners (Elliot did both)
  • read Apple and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell

It was a busy day indeed.

We officially dove into this weeks nature study today, Pumpkins! Over the weekend we carved a silly pumpkin so that was sort of when we started. Today, Elliot and I did a bunch of fun projects and practiced letters and numbers with pumpkin inspired lessons.

  • we read The Pumpkin Fair by Eve Bunting
  • painted a watercolor pumpkin
  • practiced numbers and writing the letter P with worksheets from @lively.little.home
  • created a mosaic P with pumpkin seeds
  • made little pumpkins with air dry clay

It was a busy fun filled day! We also enjoyed being outside just when the sun came out, had a numbers lesson and played a new matching game. A nice way to start the week.

Finishing up with Autumn Tree Study Week, over the past few days we accomplished pretty much all that was on my list. We still need to make our ghost leaves so we will do that tomorrow.

  • We learned how trees grow from The Magic & Mystery of Trees by Jen Green
  • did some tree rubbings on two of our maple trees in the yard
  • Elliot traced all different types of leaf shapes (linework practice) from Trees: A Rooted History by Piotr Socha & Wojciech and Grajkowski
  • Had an art lesson on drawing leaves
  • Created a leaf collage with leaves I collected from our yard
  • Read Sky Tree by Thomas Locker and really loved the beautiful paintings
  • Read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert

We both enjoyed studying trees this week. Elliot really loved that Daddy was part of some of the lessons too. Looking forward to next weeks nature study, which is all about pumpkins. Perfect timing with Halloween right around the corner.
